Show BEN LOMOND BEACON. March 15, 1979, Page 4 Presented by Stable Publications by Keith Duncan Fifteen players make up the 1979 Stahle Publications Region One basketball cast. Each of the eight schools in Region One were Al-St- ar represented. ' 1979 will be remembered by most Region One followers as one of the most well balanced years in some time. There was probably never a moment that four or five teams thought they had a chance for the title, even with four or five games still left on the schedule. Roy High had to win their final eight games to surge into first place and capture the title for the third con secutive year. The Royals sputtered at the opening gate and it wasnt till a blow out at Qearfield, that Fred Fernandes half-wa- y jokingly said, Guess all we need to do now is to win eight games straight. Oearfield was the big surprise in 1978-7The Falcons were not picked by many observers to win the title, but led the Region One ranks longer than any other squad. It wasnt until 9. the next to last game that they faltered and fell into a second place tie with Layton, both schools finishing 10-- 4. Layton defeated Oearfield twice and Roy once to help find themselves in the second place tie. It certainly has been the year of the Lancer hi Region One. Layton captured Region One in football and then took state. In the basketball tournament, featured Layton was the top finisher among Region One teams, taking fourth. Viewmont was the biggest surprise 4-- in the first part of the season, but then hit a late season skid to finish fourth in the rankings of Region One. Weber High may not have been as good as pickers thought Uiey were, so lets not call them a disappointment. The Warriors were a fairly sound team and probably lost more close, close games than anyone else. Bountiful and Sky View, two teams which will probably be strong contenders fo their respective league titles next year, finished in a tie for sixth and seventh. The Braves go to the ranks and the Bobcats will come back to haunt Region One teams next season. The Bobcats took fifth in state for the second consecutive year. Bonneville gained a lot under first year head coach, Gary(Alverson. Look for the Lakers to change their record, with only two seniors on the team, why not? pre-seas- 3-- A 1-- MarkSindle Fred Fernandes Fifteen Players Roger Vincent, Russ Florence, and Larry Read are all Clearfield Falcons and each has landed a spot on the 1979 Region One team. From Layton, Gordon Anderson, Brandon Flint and Matt Stireman were the selections. Sky View placed Todd McKenna and Todd Stevens. Bountifuls Blaine Bernard was a near unanimous choice. Cory Sylvester of Bonneville represents the Lakers. Roy salt both talented Fred Fernandes and Mark Sindle to the team. Viewmont shows off a couple of hot shooting guards in Brad Thacker and Jim Miller. Weber on the High placed Mark Montgomery 1979 team. The fifteen players selected make up quite a group and probably are some of the best talent to emerge from these schools in some time. A few of the performers have bright careers ahead of them in major college basketball and still others will probably star on junior college courts. Most of the fifteen selected, finished in the top of Region One scoring statistics. You'll find them also dominating the rebound chart and every other category. Congratulations, 1979 Region One All-St- team. kii rf 'WM'l Cory Sylvester Roy 9. Han 1 9 In the beginning it was attempted to select a first team, second team, and third team, but w e found that the No. com1 team was in pretty direct petition to the second team and even the third team. We had as much trouble as the WAC Conference had in selecting theirs. Viewmont, Bountiful, Bonneville were all and View, Sky under the direction of first year head Congratulations coaches in 1978-7are due for their successes. Clearfield, Bonneville Coach Craig Hansen of Oearfield and Coach Ted Smith of Roy have 9 been selected as the Region 1978-7- of the Year by Stahle One Publications. Their selections were announced this week and both will receive a . special for certificate their achievement. ( 1978-7- 9 was a year of Rookie Herad Coaches, five teams competing with first-yehead coaches. Only Coach Smith, Coach Dick Conolly, and Coach Doug Moon were left as veteran coaches after the 1977-7- 8 season. Coach Hansen is only the third basketball coach in the baseketball history of Clearfield High. He was ar . among the first graduating class to emerge from Clearfield and was a member of a second place team from Clearfield in 1963. He not only played under Coach Marcus Garrett, but in the early 1970s helped assist Garrett. Before this season and for the past four seasons, Coach Hansen assisted Coach Roger Reid in basketball duties. Oearfield has always enjoyed a strong tradition of winning basketball at the school and Coach Hansen helped keep that alive with the team he coached this season. The Falcons finished in a second place tie with Layton High, both finishing with 194 records. v " Y m 4 J asSM MattStireman Brandon Flint Layton Layton Hansen used both discipline and a firm gentleness to help guide his team. Clearfield started the season by winning ten straight games and led the Region One chase for most of the season. He focused the attention on hard work, pride, and unity as the basis of a winning program. And just recently, the Utah High School Officials Association selected him as the recipient of a plaque for . displaying the most sportsmanship and control of his bench throuphouL the season and in.the Gordon Anderson Layton . . .f - v .st nament. i v ;L ' f 'J h j t ? Coach Ted Smith has done wonders with the Roy High baseketball program the past six years, but his three consecutive Region One titles will never be forgotten. Smith has turned the basketball fortunes at Roy High completely around since his arrival at the school. This past season his Royals claimed their last eight games to win the league title by a single game. An comeback overtime impressive victory over Clearfield in the next to last game of the season was a victory hell never forget. At the state tournament, Roy came the closest they have ever come to playing for a state championship this season, being barely edged by East in an overtime game. Coach Smith and his players wept after the contest. The Royals had stunned the Special Events Center crowd by giving top rated East the game they gave them. They didnt want anything but first place and the victory was nearly theirs. Basketball smarts is the best way to describe'. Coach Smith, he knows the game as well as any in the state. Montgomery broke statistic records in almost every category at Weber. Going back to his sophomore year at Weber, not too many followen of the Warrion would have thought such was possible. The Plain City native lettered all three yean for Weber High School and scored nearly a 1000 points for the Weber teams in three yean. As a sophomore he netted 208 points and In his junior year he scored 318. This year the final status had him for a total of 404 points. 4r4 . . 0 . As be and his teammates exited off the fioor after being beaten by West, Montgomery showed his emotions as taan spotted his face. Despite the Warrion 1 record, Montgomery never once showed any signs of giving up. Montgomery Weber 11-1- their teams have concluded their seasons, Big Mont gave to the Warrion his all. What you call that kind of service and dedication is not explainable in words. Even Mark would have a hard time telling you what it is. In rebounding, Montgomerys stats an just as improved. As a sophomore he averaged over 10 a game and finished with a total of 347. As a juntos he finished the season with 381 and this season he had seven more, a total of 39. For the 1978-7- 9 season, Montgomery finished with a plus shooting tally from the fist!
