Show i Coed Volleyball BLN LOMOND BEACON, it Jttl I Nov. 9, 1 978, Paqe 5 MM c h ff v hi) kn 1 frm v u l CMC ,- A By Keith Duncan t Volleyball success is a living tradition for past coed Weber High squads. 1978 is no different Past Warrior teams have built top billed excitement in the community, some have taken Region titles and still others have went on to the state meet and finished a very respectable second. What more could be asked for This seasons squad know's very well what else is needed. They notice it every time they walk by the trophy case. Whats missing is a coveted state championship, something that every girl and coach knows is within reach The Warrior women have taken great strides in reaching their goal, holding a 1 record in Region One This week the team faces what could be their most two crucial games of the year. On Tuesday the team traveled to Bountiful and on Thursday they will entertain Roy. Inside l.ook Several girls are highly responsible for the success the Warriors have enjoyed thus far Lets take a look Ann Rackham is described by Coach Jan Keim as the most conShe is sistent player constantly improving For example she has learned to spike with her left hand, she got one against Clearfield She tries constantly tries to improve on all her skills, said Keim Ann is 9-- one of the Weber team captains this season Holly Rich has played for three years with the Warriors and is a team captain Coach Keim was stated as Holly, I cant really say saying, enough about her because of her size, but shes up and hitting shes only with the rest of them She will keep us in a lot of crucial games She doesnt even consider herself small Lisa Godell is a senior and is a perfectionist She tries to do every skill perfectly and is probably her own worse coach "SheU get down on herself a lot more than anyone else and that just causes her to do that much better. She is talented in all the skills, one of my top players, said Coach Keim Robin Lundquist has played just two years and is probably one of the better blockers m the league Coach Keim figures she has two of the finest blockers in the state, and Robin is one of them She has improved tremendously, especially staying out of the net She hasnt had a net violation m sometime Everybody on the team will agree that she makes saves that no one else could even dream of making because of her long 5-- arms Weve nicknamed her Guerilla arms, because of those long arms and were grateful for them, said Coach Keim Karen Garner is a junior and is considered by Coach Keim as one of the finest blockers in the state, if not the best. Coach Keim stated, She is a super, super blocker and has great jumping ability And she is going to be a great hitter whenever she gets If she could hit like aggressive Kristen Frazier, she would be unbelievable. She is a sprinter in track and has great leg muscles. For the past two weeks she has been hurt with a knee injury, but is coming back this week to play regular. Kristen Frazier has started with the Weber team for the past two years She has probably got the most power of anyone on the team, a hard worker She is a lot like Ann Rackham in many ways, her and Ann are my two most consistent players The main thing about Kristen is her enthusiasm, shes always excited and jumping around and doing funny things out there on the court You never have to motivate said Coach Keim Kristen her, suffered a leg injury last week and was a doubtful starter against Bountiful on Tuesday Leann Hadley, Maye Miya, and Crystal Wride are the top substitues They have changed the outcome of many games with the momentum that they bring into a game, said Keim i y: . s f J f 1 f $ A, 5 wjy W t i r ' - , hs A 4 Coach Joe James has announced that the annual Weber Warrior football banquet will be held on November 17 m the school cafeteria The banquet is scheduled to get un derway at 7 p m During the evening, awards will be presented to the top athletes of the season A MVP award will be given qjong with the most outstanding defensive and offensive players being recognized By Keith Duncan Another prep basketball season is quickly taking shape Football pads are being put away, award emblems are being scratched off helmets, and myraids of young men are hopefully making an attempt to land positions on some high school basketball team Three of the areas" schools, Clearfield, Roy and Weber are all pitted against each other in the same region, once again getting ready for another action packed season On Monday of this week flocks of basketball hopefuls crowded gym floors at Clearfield, on the Royal s court and at Weber But admist this crowd were some seasoned veterans or at least wed like to think so Three of those players included Roger Vincent of Clearfield, Mark Montgomery of Weber and Fred Fernandes of Roy All were starters with their respective teams in last seasons action and all will figuie heavily in this years cage battles We went so far as to find out their feelings about the upcoming season even though the first pre season games are some three weeks away and here is what we found MARK MONTGOMERY, WEBFR Its really going to be a lough league because there are so many tough teams So many guys are coming back from last season Three teams from our region placed m slate and I wouldn't be surprised if they did it again I think we're just going to ha e to be ready to play each game The team that wins this year is going to have to have players who have played through the summer and every other free minute they had You just cant expect to be good any more by just playing in the winter, there are a lot of good guys out there to beat you out Coach Connolly has been around Weber a long time and he knows what is going on He is a really good teacher on how to play the fundementals of the game Im glad hes my coach I RED FERNANDES, ROY, Im still trying to get football out of my head, but I feel in time that things will work themselves out in my mind Im positive that no team is going to run away with the title this year, even body is tough to beat Mark Sindte is coming back and Ill bet hell be one of the toughest in the state Greg Wood, Rob Vanderwood, Jay Nate Herzog, and Jon Nickerson are all going to be them best this year Wayne Hall and a Souter, bimeh of others look really good too 1 look for Weber to be really tough with all their front line returning The whole league is returning all sorts of big guys from last season i KHIS I lost a In at tin L 1 fcS- TRADES WELCOME HIGHEST PRICES PAIDji VrifE k it i i t u t leai field opponent.
