A native of Berkeley, CA, Harris attended Berkley High. As a senior, he averaged 18 points and eight rebounds a game and shot over 70 percent from the field, a school record. He was named, Bay, California and Coast. Berkeley High went on to win the Richmond Berkeley Athletic League. They were the North Coast Section Champions and finished fourth in the Tournament of Champions. Doug is an excellent percentage shooter, said McCarthy. Fundamentally he is very sound and is an excellent player. His rebounding ability will help us tremendously up front next season. Coach McCarthy is expected to announce more signings early next week. Those events boast a great deal of depth as th Weber signs 1 fair position to challenge for the Big Sky title, if he can get enough points out of his running events to compensate for the lack of personnel in the field events. The Wildcats only entry in the javelin, high jump, long jump and discus is versatile decathlete Jeff Swanger who finished third in the 1979 NCAA Decathlon. Hislop has but two inexperienced pole vaulters and no one in the shot put or long jump. If Swanger can score well in his field event specialties, the Wildcats could pose a threat to defending champion Northern Arizona. College Basketball Coach Neil McCarthy, has announced the signing of Doug Harris, a 7 forward from Wenatchee Valley Junior College in Wenatchee, WA. Harris averaged 24 points and 10 rebounds for Wenatchee Head Coach Bill Pandiani, and led his team to the Washington State Junior College championships with a 21-- 7 record. Wenatchee went on to win the state championship for junior colleges. He was selected as the MVP in Region Three and was First Team. The long distances, 5000 and 10,000 meters, are good with Norberto Segura returning ans the defending champion in the 10,000 meters. Segura also finished second in the 5,000. Swanger returns as the defending conference champion in the decathlon and is expected to repeat as champion this season as a junior. Hislop feels that Northen Arizona and Idaho should be considered the favorities. Idaho is very strong in the field events and NAU is very well balanced overall. Hislop says that after thoe two teams, anyone else in the conference could place about anywhere you would want to put them. Hislop said that this could be the most balanced season ever in the Big Sky Conference, as far as track and field is concerned, and he wouldnt be surprised if there were only a 20 point difference between the first place and sixth place team. Friday and Saturday, WSC hosts the Big Sky Conference Southern Division Tennis Championships at Edman Courts. Weber, will be competing. Northern Arizona, Idaho State and Nevada-Ren- o On Saturday, Weber State plays host to the annual OGDEN STANDARD-WEBER STATE COLLEGE High School Track Invitational. Over 50 high school from the state of Utah will be competing. On Friday, Weber State hosts the WOLFES SPORTING GOODS-WEBESTATE Track Invitational for the high school girls in the state. The starting times for both meets is 9 a.m. with the trails and 1 p.m. for the finals. Both events will be held in Wildcat Stadium. On Saturday, most of the team will be in Logan for the Intermountain Invitational at Utah State University. Coach Chick Hislop is taking six athletes to the Mount SAC Relays in California. Wednesday-ThursdaJeff Swanger competes in his first Decathlon of the outdoor season. Also taking the trip to California are steeplechasers Doug Friedli, Rex Hohnholt and Paul Pilkington. Norberto Segura and Javier Chavez are running in the 10,000 meters. The steeplechase and 10,000 meters are scheduled for Saturday. at Colorado State Last week, the Wildcats placed second in a Four-Wa- y University. Adams State College won with 96 points, Weber had 83 V2, despite winning SEVEN first places. Tennis Weber State takes its first step towards defending the Big Sky Conference tennis title they won a year ago. The Wildcats host the Southern Division Championships on Friday and Saturday at Edman Courts, located directly east of Wildcat Gym. Weber State and Northern Arizona are expected to be the favorites. WSC defeated NAU in a dual match, earlier this year in Flagstaff. Nevada-Ren- o is their an it first year in the league and unknown, presents Weber has not played them this season. Weber State is now 21-- 7 overall and up-Th- State-Fresn- is 2-- 4-- 0 2-- OGDEN To make the Wildcats competitive for the upcoming 1980 football season, Head Coach Pete Riehlman knows that substantial progress must be made during Spring drills to accomplish that purpose. Riehlman saw improvement of his through the 1979 young team mid-wa- y season as injuries forced him to shuffle the lineup and insert some young freshmen and sophomores. Those youngsters responded and the Wildcats were 3 in their last six games after a 5 start. Back again, a little stronger, wiser and more experienced the Wildcats have 37 lettermen returning and each of those players started at least one game last year. Included in that number are 18 on offense and 19 on the defensive side, which leads Riehlman into what his philosophy is going to be concerning the up coming Spring drills. Since we had so many young players forced into starting roles last season, the number one thing or goal we want to achieve during our Spring drills is to eliminate our turnovers. We had 48 turnovers last season and I dont think there is any question, we cannot win football games turning the ball over that much. Riehlman says that the key now is to turn the tables and teach - the defense to get the ball to the offense more. On the other side of the coin, we want our defense to be more aggressive and force more turnovers. After experimenting with the quarterback position early in the season, Riehlman settled on junior college transfer Bill Kelly. Kelly, who at 250 pounds was probably the heaviest signal caller in the nation, has trimmed down to 225 pounds and is much quicker this season and will have the luxury of attending Spring practice and get to know the backs and receivers much better. Kelly threw for 1,178 yards and eight touchdowns last season and was the teams punter with 57 punts for a 40.3 average. The real strength on the offense, according to Riehlman, will be tFe offensive line where eight lettermen return. I think the offensive line will be the strong part of our offensive game. Everyone returns from last season, a little bigger and quicker and all have some good game experience behind them.. . Again, their only weakness is mental. They are learning gradually that it takes a tremendous amount of mental concentration along the offensive line to be successful. Much of that learning takes place in actual game experience, so I expect us to really improve in that area. Heading the list of offensive linemen is Tim Small (6-- 230, Soph.) who became only the second freshman in Big Sky Conference football First history to make Team as a freshman. Small started the season at guard, but was switched to tackle due to injuries. He will be back at the guard position this season. Tom Brothers (6-- 220, Soph.) gets the opening nod at center. Another 5, sophomore, Lawrence Livingston (6-240) will be opposite Small at the other guard position. Livingston played most of the season at center, and should Brothers falter, Livingston would switch back to center, though guard is his natural position. Actually, Vince Guinta (6-234, Senior) is listed as the tentative starter at a guard position, he will be there or could play at any of the other two positions, (tackle or center) if called upon. John Mitchell (6-- 260, Soph.) was a starting tackle as a freshman, but a knee injury limited his play towards the end of the year. The knee has been operated on and how well it healed will dictate how much Spring practice time he will see. The Receiving troops are solid with three-deeat split end, flanker and 200, tight end. Curl Miller (6-Junlior), was second team Big Sky last season and led the Wildcats in receiving with 33 catches for 545 yards and a team high six touchdowns. Backing him up at Steve Baggs 170, Soph.) who runssprints on the WSC track team, and Kory Bosgieter (6-out 192, Soph.) a rangy-receivof Bonneville High in Ogden. Bosgieter and Miller are listed as back-u- p punters to Bill Kelly. j Duane Benton (6-175, Senior) was the starting flanker last year and was second to Miller in receiving with 407 yards on 25 catches and one touchdown. Scott Roth (5-175, Soph.) last season and should give Benton a battle for a starting position come next Fall. Dave Sebahar (6-210, Senior) and Scott Zellmer (6-200, Soph.) shared the tight end spot. Zellmer was second to Miller in TDs scored with three. At running backs, Kelvin Matthews 205, Soph.) looks to take Eric Hills place. Matthews appeared in 10 games last season, carrying the ball 42 times for 135 yards. His biggest game was in the season finale against Utah State, with 71 yards. Mark Fiehler (5-185, Senior) was injured most of the season and was used mostly for returning kickoff and punts. Back for his final year is three-yea- r letterman Willie Glasper 190) at fullback. Glasper is one of the best blocking fullbacks in the nation according to Riehlman. He only carried the ball 29 times all season for 109 yards, but caught 23 passes for 208. 220, Soph.) Wimpy Roberson who was second to Hill in total rushing, (77 carries, 242 yards) will back Glasper up as well as the tailback spot. The placekicking game will again be strong. Roger Ruzek (6-175, Soph.) tied the school record for the longest field goal (51 yards) and he did it twice (vs. Northern Arizona, vs. Utah State). He hit 14 of 15 PATs and 11 of 19 field goal tries. Six of those attempts came from 50 yards or more. On the defensive side, the first concern is the defensive line that lost three lettermen. Mike Humiston, an second term performer, will be at the strong linebackers spot and Mike Nichter will be in the middle. Nichter learned a lot as a freshman last season, taking over for Rich who sustained a neck injury. John Fullington will be moved back over from the offensive line. But again, we dont have the depth we need at linebacker, and hopefully some of the junior college players we have brought in and our incoming freshmen next Fall can help the situation. The defensive backfield had some outstanding players including Mark 180, Junior) who earned Massey First-Teag Sky honors at free safety. Massey led the team in interceptions with five (for 72 yards) and was the leading tackier in the secondary with 68 total tackles, 28 of them unassisted. Greg Kramer, 185, Soph.) who was used as a running back, will switch back over to his natural position (free safety) and back up Massey. Kramer set a school record for most kickoff returns in a season (29), a game (7) and for most kickoff returns yards in a season (603) and game (127). Phil Singleton, (6-- 195, Senior) a three-yea- r letterman is back at strong 195, safety, with Dale Getty (6-Senior) and Greg Davis, (6-195, Junior) listed as backups. The cornerbacking situation is really up for grabs with five top candidates looking to fill the two 175, positions. Dennis McMaster Senior) and Elbert Gray (6-175) appear to have the inside track simply because of the amount of time they spent in game situations last season. Darren Rhodes (6-180, Soph.) was a starter as a freshman, but a knee injury against Nevada-Ren- o mid-wa- y through the season took him out of the lineup, but he should be a top contender again. Summing up his overall Spring football philosophy, Riehlman said: First, we try to look at our players in their positions and evaluate them. We are going to move some players around and take a look at them in different positions. We want to teach fundamentals and put across three or four points to them. One, our offensive line must learn to be more aggressive off the ball. Two, the running backs have to run hard and more aggressively. Third, on defense, were going to have to play the ball in the air much better, and fourth, be more aggressive when the ball is loose, in other words, take advantage of the opponent when the opportunity account now insured to $100,000 by F.D.I.C. |
