The Senate and the House will almost surely continue to w ith the issue of abortion during the coming months and years Abortion is an issue that will not go away, particularly in view of the new insights into fetal life which research provides. Hardly a month goes by without the publication of an informative and fascinating study of life before birth Unfortunately, our moral sensibilities are not keeping pace with our scientific advances. It is my earnest hope that the abortion ethic which now prevails in some sections of the country can be reversed. The best way to defeat it is through a Constitutional amendment. Last Thursday, I introduced an amendment which was added to a pending Constitutional amendment allowing the District of Columbia full representation in Congress. The purpose of including my amendment with one as ill advised as the District amendment is to expedite action on abortion. I would prefer that abortion be considered alone. But time is of the essence, and I fear too much time will elapse before Congress is able to deal with it as a separate issue. In the meantime, the abortion situation is growing more critical by the day as thousands of unborn children are being killed In my attempt to speed up debate on abortion, I hope to bring an end to this kind of killing. The proposed article reads: With respect lo the right to life, the word 'person,' as used in this article and the first and fourteenth articles of amendment to the Constitution of the United States, applies to all human beings, irrespective of age, health, function, or condition of dependency, including their unborn offspring at every stage of their biological development." be faced fiierieaa For the consecutive year, the American bicycle industry is celebrating American Bike Month this May. Chances are the youngster is a gifted artist. So the school places that student with a mentor. A mentor? If you remember Homers writings, you may recall that when Odysseus left his happy home to do battle in theTiojan War, he left his sons education to a friend named Mentor That's where the term came from. The artistic vxlh grader, then, would be introduced to an interested, accomplished painter who would help the youngster with hi.. technique. But art is only one field. Mentors are being found for Utah students with burning interests in such fields as lav., medicine, architecture, music, math and many other pur suits. The use of mentors is a part - and only a part - of some activities sprouting in Utah schools because of an appropriation made by the Legislature to fund programs for gifted and talented students. Each district receives funds and decides how to them. For instance, a Junior high school in Weber School District is finding students talented in science. Then- do in u-- e - dividual research and experimentation on rather sophisticated projects - ones that have baffled some of the brightest minds in the world. A ninth grader in the program developed plans for storing radioactive wastes. Another student developed a model oil refinery that c ,m be powered by sunlight. At present, refineries use a ciMlv fuel for that purpose - oil. A report from the State Board of Education states that the program for gifted and talented students tends to upgrade education generally, and added: It has created considerable community inter st m education and many people are becoming involved m mentor programs." The program for gifted and talented students has taken a long time to get here, but its a solid, necessary part of our schools. |
