An estimated 300 health and education professionals and parents of handicapped people from throughout the Intermountain West will gather in the University Union for the two-da- y workshop. The symposium will several feature nationally known figures in the fields of bidethics, birth 10-1- defects research, clinical and genetic genetics screening. One of the major ways to prevent birth defects and mental retardation is to educate people, says Dr. Robert M. Fineman, director of the Division of Medical Genetics at University of Utah Medieal Center. Genetic diseases run in families and once theyre identified as such, we can explain available options to couples so that they can make informed decisions. The symposium is geared to parents; special education teachers; social workers; oc- physical, speech, cupational and hearing specialists; and other psychologists health deal with professionals who the problems of birth defects and mental according to Dr. Fineman.
