Then slowly the region rose and the Rocky Mountains, of which the Wasatch Mountains are a part, were formed by folding and thrust faulting, only to be eroded nearly away. About 20 million years ago, the earths crust broke along the Wasatch Fault and the present Wasatch Mountains rose slowly above the valley. As they rose, streams such as the Ogden and Weber the Warriors being formed to the west. Old stream channels were blocked, and lakes similar to Great Salt Lake probably existed at times, but their deposits have not been recognized. During the Ice Age, however, Lake Bonneville, 1000 feet deep, occupied the Salt Lake Valley and extended eastward through Ogden Canyon to form a bay in Ogden Valley. The waves of this great lake carved three prominent beaches or terraces on the east mountains. As the climate varied, streams and currents built bars and deltas. Still later, Ogden River cut the river valley to the north. Wasatch Fault The Wasatch Fault, one of the earths great crustal formed factures, the precipitous, 150 mile long Wasatch Mountain Front.
