Coach Keim recognized Kristen Frazier, Robin Lundguist and Karen Garner as having exceptional performances. We played together again. Its been a long time since we played together like that, said Frazier. Perhaps they were as surprised as they were pleased when they were told that they had qualified to compete in Salt Lake in the Intermountam competition. The girls didnt walk away with egg on their faces there either thats, evident with Mary and Shanna taking 1st in the 50, 100 and 220 and the hurdles (in them respective age groups ) While Stacey and Julie scored 1st in their age catagories in the 440 and 880 This again qualified the girls to run for bigger and better things. So off they flew (at the Hershey Co s expense) to Huntington, W. Virginia to the Hershey Nationals. Now that means that four young ladies from Plain City were competing on a national level with the fastest kids in the whole country. Stacey had the misfortune of breaking a toe while exercising and tumbling in a gymnasium there and to top that off she brought the wrong kind of shoes, so consequently had to use someone elses shoes (that were too big.) In spite of these handicaps, Stacey took 5th place while her comrades, Mary, Julie, and Shanna each placed 4th Their next competative series started in Provo with the Jr. Olym- pics. This was a state competion in which Mary set a state record for her age group (11) in the soft ball throw. Julie set a state record in the 440 for her age group ( 13) and Stacey held the state record in her age bracket (12) but lost it when she fell just before the finish line in the second race. (This may be attributed to Stacey having to wear oversized foot gear again as she left her own shoes home.) However she and Shanna did qualify in the 220, 440, and 880. (In order to qualify, athletes must place 1st, 2nd, or 3rd ) From there it was on to Twin Falls, Idaho for the Jr. Olympic five state meet where Mary was awarded silver medals in the 50, 100 and 220. Julie recieved a gold in the 440 and a silver m the 880. Shanna received silvers in the 50, 100, and 220. Stacey took a gold m the 880 and a bronze in the 440. The ten state meet was held in Boise, Ida. where once again these gals ran away with some precious metal. Stacey received a gold in the 880 while Julie took a gold in the 440 and a silver in the 880 and Mary received silvers in the 50, 100, and 220. For Stacey, Julie and Mary (who were too young to go on) the competition was over, but Shanna (who barely qualified age wise) went on to the Jr. Olympic nationals in Lincoln Neb., where she placed 4th. JoeAnn compares their success to that of a horse taken out of pasture, Shanna has decided to run her way through nursing school with scholarships so her parents can spend their money on the others in the family. That girl," her mother smiled Shes always thinking of others. Stacey isnt sure she likes all t . attention that competition brin .. Its scary, she says smiling, 1 m not that good. It is apparent however that these young ladies have what it takes to accomplish what they want. , y y , y a ,h cat i tv t'' J fas?'4' 4 - 1 I AVr I r (ill: 7 Wm fk , rr. , , SV V b 's f Shanna Jenkins - , I i 1 t I - J V, . who has probably been the most consistent performer, was selected as Player of the Week. She was modest about receiving the recognition, saying the credit goes to everyone. Coach Keim believes Ann has been her most consistent player all season. Rackham seldom if never touches the bench during a game or even a practice session. This is it, this is my last year, she mourned once. Ann is a senior and is completing her third and final year of play with Weber. Ann moved with her family to North Ogden the year she entered seventh grade at North Ogden Junior High. She tried out for the volleyball team just because everyone else did and somehow she said, I made it. In junior high everybody tries out, its just the thmg to do. My eighth grade year I had to work a little harder to make the team and the same happened in my last year there," said Ann. High school competition was something she never thought about, she wasnt even sure if it existed, but Coach Keim wandered by one afternoon on a scouting trip and that was all it took. She was encouraged by the Weber coach to try out and Ann was ready for sophomore year. Its fun to challenge other peoples abilities. Id rather be doing this than sitting down and reading a book. I find you have to be mentally ready as well as physically, it really keeps you in shape, said Ann. In comparison to junior high competition, Ann looks back and finds she did everything for the coach, but now in high school Coach Keim has taught the girls to themselves, to win because they want to win. Bountiful has only one defeat this season with a tough game against Roy still scheduled. The girls played very well against Bountiful, but the letdown m the second game killed us," said Coach Jam Keim, Im just thankful were in the state playoffs, providing we win these few last contests. It's a whole new season down there, nobody is a favorite in my opinion. Weber took the first set from Bountiful 2 and were leading in the second 14-- just one point away from victory. The Braves notched 9 straight points and won the game sending it into a third game which the Warriors lost. Last Thursday, the Warriors stung the Royals in two games to capture a crucial win. The rivalry between the two schools is intense and every play was pressure-packed- . Dozens of fans filled the benches in both games and that excited the girls, according to several of the players. Rackham Stands Out The unique characteristic about the Warriors team this season, is that no one is the superstar. The girls didnt plan it that way, its just the way it is.
