JENSEN, lymtER SAYS THE STRAIGHT LINE SPROCKET Over the fair street he sped outstripping time ai.d space, like the meteor Hashing across the midnight skies, he came from where no one knew, and went to where no one saw, so swift his tlight. Only the gay coldate OS wheel were ors of the up-tseen for an instant to be swallowed up the next in indefinable space. Only the swishing of the wheel scintilla- ting in the sunlight was heard, like the momentary hum of the festive mosquito when he darts away in search of better pastures after vainly endeavoring to gather a twilght slip-pa- r from our noble (?) brow, which has grown high through study, but mostly through losspf hair. His eye gleams with frozed fire, of a maddened brain and the contortions of his face give rise to graver doubts of his entire sanity. Cliildren flee from before him ; dogs with frenzied yelps, curl their tails between their legs, and depart from his awfull approach. But unknowing, unseeing, keeps up the fearful pace, scattering havoc iu his way. Bow down, ye, sinner, before this god of the pavement, the o ' h, Brigham Street scorcher. A resolution will be offered to the effect that dues and entrance fee be combined in the form of an initiation fee. 'f1 The sprinkling nuisance lias become unbearable to the knight of the silent steed. We withhold comment at this time but refer riders to the following resolution from the highway committee of the League of American Wheelmen : Salt Lake City, Feb. 28, 98. To the Honorable Mayor and City Council, of Silt Lake City: In the interest of imgentlemen provement of condition of our streets, that all may benefit therefrom, we beg to suggest as follows : to the contract now . According 9 i existing all street sprinkling is to be done to the satisfaction of the super-vise- r of streets. 2. That the careless method heretofore adopted for this work by those interested has been productive of endless dissatisfaction upon the the part of the people who use the roads aud those who use the crossings. 3. Any improvement in the method will naturally be combatted by those holding contract, for the reason that to properly do this work will be more expensive to the contractor, The public is interested however only in the improvement, for enough is being 1 . ... OUR paid for good work. With these preliminaries we beg to say that the method complained of is that of flooding the streets instead of sprinkling them. The result of this method is that every team and every vehicle of all descriptions are rendered unlit for second use until the filth and mud thrown up from the street is removed. It is an injustice that any ones property should be injured or pleasure marrod by a contractors failure to do his properly. There has been complaint of wheelmen being upon the sidewalk. The sprinkling (flooding) cart has driven them off the road. We are writing from general observation extending over several years last past, and knowing the sentiment of a large body of wheelmen and women, we respectfully ask your honorable body to direct and insist that more sprinkling and less flooding be done ; that a strip of from three to six feet upon the roadways shall be sprinkled once a day or as may be needed and reserved for wheelmen, that the sidewalks during the summer months may be less hampered; that a strip upon the paved streets shall be left dry on one side thereof, aud that the crossings shall also be kept dry. We respectfully urge that the foregoing we consider to be clearly within your province for the reason that your supervisor approves the bills of the sprinkling contractor, aud can compel good work to be done before . . .
