Range Tour I J?Vjf ' I I T n The State Legislature Appropriation Committee and other guests were hosted by the Wood and Eyre Cattle Company on a tour to their Indian Peak Range last Friday, June 8th, according to Grant Esplin, Beaver County Agent. Approximately 80 people were in attendance to see the dramatic improvement of the range and enjoy a delicious steak dinner furnished by the Wood and Eyre families. The cattle company is in the process of improving 5,000 acres of private and state land under the State Rangeland Improvement Program and the ASCS, LTA program. Some of the land was dominated by sagebrush and r some by trees before the clearing and seeding was initiated. In this condition production of feed for livestock and game was very limited. The clearing and seeding has resulted in an excellent stand of grass that will provide abundant grazing for cattle and game. About 40 head of Antelope summered on one of the sections last summer and produced a good crop of fawns. Removing the trees has also caused water to spring up and run down the valleys in areas where no water was found before the trees were removed. The group left Milford High School at 10:30 a.m. in a school bus, vans and pickups. First stop was on the Buckhorn section that is in the second year after being planted to Siberian Wheatgrass and Russian Wild Rye Grass. An excellent stand of grass is now growing op this section and could be grazed by cattle this fall. An " 4 Things are pinon-junipe- riT at Mt. Holly! A day's work for Butch Mercier might include climbing poles to repair an open wire line damaged central by candals, adjusting office equipment, preparing forms relating to new installations, and checking the frequency response of a special service line. Because his customers are also his neighbors, Mercier says his job gives him a sense of belonging to the communities in which he works. "The people are hospitable, congenial, pleasant, and helpful," he states. "This work is not just a job. You've got the community to be concerned about." Butch and his family moved to Utah from California several months ago. He previously worked as an Installation Super-- , visor for Pacific Bell in Fontana, a suburb of San Bernardino. He ahd his wife Sandy are the Rory and parents of a Craig. The Merciers are getting accus-tome- s to a more enjoyable lifestyle in Utah. "It's too busy in California with all the people, cars, highways, and houses," says Butch. "Even though I have a lot to do here, I like the physical aspects of my work and I like the sense of accomplishment I get from helping people." eleven mile pipeline installed by the Woods and Eyres furnishes water to this section and the Indian Creek section and to the G'urney Cattle Company Range and the Carter Range. The second stop was on the Indian Creek section where an example of the importance of having a good seed bed and drilling the grass was shown. The third stop was at the Indian Creek seeding. The steak fry at Cottonwood was next. Grant Esplin and Joe Hillock barbecued the steaks, Carl Makon and Joe Melling dutch ovened the potatoes and Wood and Eyre ladies took care of all the other delicious food. Vern Wood who the tour introduced the guests. Next stop was a section near the Cougar Spar Mine part of which was seeded last fall and seeding will be completed this fall. Next stop was in an area that was burned a few years ago, and a mixture of smooth brown d orchard, intermediate wheat grasses and alfalfa and sweet clover was planted. Although the stand isn't thick there is some excellent grass in this area. The stream of water flowing through this area that has appeared as a result of the elimination of the trees is a delight to see. The tour then traveled to state section 32 to see an excellent stand of grass. The contrast of nothing in the way of forage in the trees and the beautiful grass in the area tfiat has been cleared and seeded impressed all those in attendance. The group returned by way of the intermediate wheatgrass and crested wheat grass secdings done by the BLM and Wood and Eyre cattle company in 1958-6This is an excellent range and has done wonders for cattle and game production in that area. This tour visited an area that everyone interested in livestock, game, watershed or the environment should see. The potential for further improvement is great, such development would greatly help the economy of the area and keep additional faiflilics in Beaver County. The drum split open, spilling gasoline underneath the truck and the other vehicle involved in the accident. Both drivers ran clear before the vehicles shot up in flames. Many Americans, like these Sale Lake men, view gasoline storage as an answer to gasoline often without realizshortages ing the terrible hazards involved in the storage of gasoline. "Storing gasoline in your car is like playing Russian roulette with flammable liquids having the odds against you," said Investigator G. R. Mclff of the Salt Lake City Fire Department. If the car is sitting in the sun, it may reach a temperature high enough for toxic and volatile vapors to release into the interior of the ear. One gallon of fully evaporated gasoline is nearly as powerful as a case of dynamite, Inspector Mclff said. A CB radio with a transmitter would be enough to ignite vapors. Local merchants have reported an enormous run on gasoline cans and tanks. The Army-NavSurplus Store in downtown Salt Lake City sold 350 one- - and cans in 10 days. The Buyer has been unable to get cans because his supplier sends them all to California where they sell for twice the price they sell for in Utah. Safety cans vent themselves other during containers do not. Containers scalable for water may not be sealable for gasoline since gas is much less dense than water, so be sure to use a safety can. Fill cans only about 75 percent full. "Leave about 25 percent empty to allow y two-gallo- n five-gallo- n Gasoline should never be stored inside the home or garage. Recipients will not be known until the presentation. - The speaker at the banquet will be Arthur W. Burress. .. Sunday will be Memorial Ser-vice and election for new officers. A permit is required in Salt Lake City if in excess of 10 gallons is stored outside a building or it more than six gallons is stored outside a place of residence. If you see someone storing gasoline improperly and hazardously, report it to the Fire Department. You usually will not have to file a complaint. The Fire Department will investigate and take appropriate measures while keeping the source of the complaint confidential. Should you have a gasoline fire on your property, do not put water on the flames. Small fires can be smothered out with fire extinguishers. Large fires should be reported to the Fire Department immediately, as should fires in large containers which chould explode. The best thing to do is to get out of the area and call the Fire Department. Even if gasoline could be stored safely, it cannot be stored any longer than three months without of gums which coat the a build-utank and plug carburetor orifices, stopping the engine, Dr. Hill said. of Because of this build-ugums, gasoline should not be left sitting in lawn mowers over the winter.
