This Is one area which the county hopes to be able to deepen the channel to carry the water, and keep It off of fields and from threatening structures. But as the water level varies from day to day, so do the decisions on what to do about It. Whoopsl Delay that: County buys excavator to clean river channels In 3 ( ft i a surprise move last day the Beaver County Commission bought a $180,000 dollar excavator (commonly called a hydrohoe) to clean the river channel and try to prevent costly flooding; In a previous meeting the Commission had set up two committees (on the request of farmers and property owners along the rivers) tc determine the priorities and committed $40,000 to do what can be done to alleviate flooding now, and prevent flooding this spring. But Chairman Johnson who was absent from the previous meeting, told the Upper Beaver River Committee and Commissioners Pryor and Jefferson that the $40,000 from the two mill flood levy had already been committed to replace the We bridges lost last spring. cant use that money, its already committed. But the farmers argued that the county shouldnt buy that expensive equipment, but should lease or buy used. 4 Take the $40,000 and do what we can, Clark Smith told them. Jefferson said if we go Into the channel, those farmers who have done their own work will want the county to pay them back. He named a couple he said had told him they would. Johnson asked those In the room who had already done the work what their attitude would be, anil both said, yes, we will want to get our money back. Next the Commissioners turned one vehicle accident Saturday killed Rodney Eyre, Minersville, and injured two Milford youths when the 1984 Ford Pickup they were In failed to negotiate a 90 degree turn near Hamblin Valley. The accident which happened at approximately 2:15 p.m. was on a dirt road near the Stateline Mines. Eyre was thrown out of the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the site. Sheriff Cartwright said that it thats what they want, its alright with him. Though Milfords new er crystals are not yet installed, the' can stiff reach the sheriff on tne old band. Cox also indicated tbe 2C2C number would be used by the fire department, and the BOO number used However, Councilman Davis, over the fire department said he felt that the ideal situation was to have a single emergency number, and favored use of the 800 number as soon as the fire department gets its own pagers.
