Show Would you believe it Supt. Bliss sent the minutes of the School Board meeting to the News this week. A first. We have always had to run down a board member to find out what was going on before, since the board as a whole, not members mem-bers from Milford, had a policy of not releasing them unless you went to the office 8061 them. We don't know if this Is a new board policy or just a way to get me off his back because be-cause there is no mention of a policy change in the minutes. There is a motion to proceed with a $365,000 bond issue in April, which we believe to be the direct result of the board being led down a rose colored path that has them faced with $700,000 in bonds to build two gymnasiums, which evidently are going to cost $1,065,000 (last I heard it was $981,000) an increase of over 50. At this rate, and the rate in which Beaver's seating capacity keeps getting boosted, (last I hear, was 24,000), by the time construction con-struction is actually started, th cost could be nearing the national na-tional debt. o Supposedly, Braver has 4 tournament scheduled for 1977 although the Supt. has been heard quoting several other dates. But reason just doesn't prevail and since this is foul years away I certainly wouldn't want to count on it since administrators in the other districts of Region 8 will likely regain their sanity by that time and revoke any agreement agree-ment they may have made in a moment's lapse. Figure it out for yourself. Just taking the evening sessions, ses-sions, which are the only ones normally sold out. Beaver 2,000 seats, Cedar City 4,000. That's a 2,000 seat difference' at $2.00 a seat. Actually more because some seats are sold twice. But nobedy would leave the small gym, because they would be certain they wouldn't be able to get another seat. This amounts to $4,000 each each evening or $12,000 badly .needed dollars to carry on the Region functions. I don't believe that Region 8 officials are stupid enough to go for this in four years or 24 years. I don't believe that the people of their districts will permit them to go for it And I don't believe the people of Beaver County will go for It. In fact anybody that tries to tell such a monstrosity, immediately im-mediately become suspect and I immediately began to question his qualifications for his job. Add to this the fact that there are already several dates for this tournament, rang- ing from three years to five years away, all quoting the' Supt. Add the fact that even board members can't tell you exactly how many seats the Beaver Gym or Milford now calls for, (the specifications didn't did-n't say), and that when questioned, ques-tioned, the Supt. becomes very vague. Add to this the .probability that neither school will ever host a Regional tournament, and even if they do, likelyhood of ever getting a return is remote, re-mote, and you can see why this column has in the past, recommended recom-mended that the board cut the size cf the gyms to 1,200 seats in both ends of the county and keep the costs within the original orig-inal $700,000 which was passed by an overwhelming majority. We doubt that another bona election will gain a majority it will net gain our support. Neither will Supt. Bliss gel our support by sending us the minutes of School Board meeting meet-ing swhich we use only to inform in-form our readers of Board aeticn. Lots of inquiries as to what is meant by our sign on the front window, "George Is Dead!" All will be revealed in the next issue of the News. Don't miss it it includes you! As we go to press the Tigers are down one game but not out. We know that most of Milford Mil-ford will be in Provo today Thursday at 4:30 when they meet Altamont. We wish them success in this game and every one to the Consolation Cham- pionship. |
