Show Luxuries When Forced Upon People as Necessities of Life Become a Burden By kV. CLELAND B. MCAFEE Professor in McCormick Theological Seminary 4 It is a constant problem of life to restrict its burdens to the necessary things. Our luxuries become loads, and we find that we cannot travel with ease because of them. AVe cannot return to the simplicity of our fathers, but we can keep our own. It is important that we should not force these things on other people as necessities. That is the peril of arbitrary social demand. No social order which is founded on incidental things can be a worthy one. The same principal applies to matters of religion. There are certain necessary saving items f faith. These we can insist upon. There are also helpful items which are not essential. I'liese we cannot forre upon others. There are also matters of religious practice which are essential and .c&u be required. Other practices are helpful but should never be carried as burdens. The secret of the joyous Christian life is to take religion not as a burden but as an inspiration |
