George has always been proud to say he was bom in an apartment attached to the "old" Milford Public Library, to George Alfred and Macel Rogers Horton on February 23, 1927. He attended all grades in Milford schools, public graduating from MHS in 1945. He worked as a in clerk the carrier, newspaper White Market and Jefferson's Mercantile, called Railroad crews, played in a dance band, and was an iceman for the Pacific Fruit Express. During college years, he dug ditches for Springville City, UT, was a Jr. Engineer for Geneva Steel, consultant for the national institute of Educational Development, and UCLA-For- d Foundation project director at the Centra Nacional de Productividad in Mexico City. Served on active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve during 1945-4- the LDS Church Educational System, teaching seminary at Springville, UT in 1953; Milford, UT from '53-'5- 5 was his first full tirme assignment; BYUHS in Provo from '55 - '57; and as dis.trict coordinator in Eastern Utah from '57-'5- 9 and San Fetrnando Vallev, CA from '65-'6- 7. Directed LDS Institutes at of Wyoming and UCLA. Taught in institutes adjacent to 6. Obtained higher education at BAC now SUU in Cedar City from 1946-4U. of 8; U. !SLC in 1948; BYU in Provo fronn B.S. 1953, M.S. 1957; University of Wyoming, Laramie 1959-6USC, Los Anigeles 1961; and UCLA 1961-6- 9 Ed D. 1969. His Master's Thesis was "An Early History of Millford, Utah, Up to its corporation as a Town in 1903, and his doctoral dissertation was "Sjpanish Language Program Development and the Subtractive Testing of a Learning Set." 1951-5- 7, 0; George Alfred Horton, Jr. EdD U. USC, Woodbury, Occidental, Santa Monica City, and East Los Angeles Colleges in CA, and was area director of Cent. Calif. Seminaries and Institutes. Directed curriculum production, and distribution for the LDS Church Educational System from 1971-198- 0 serving teachers and students of the USA, Canada, Latin America, and Europe. A study abroad tour in 1971 prompted a succession of travel experiences that included tours to Mexico, directing England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and particularly Israel, Egypt, and Jordan. He planned and served as Dean of the Tour for the CES Lands of the Scriptures Workshops beginning in which ultimately 1975, included on thousand seminary and institute teachers and wives. Served as director of BYU Jerusalem Study Abroad program in 1978 and 1983. Later he was associate director and then church hobbies, recreation, activity, and local affairs. He often expresses gratitude for his teachers in Milford's schools for helping him learn the fundamentals of director of the BYU Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies from 1988-'9- 1. Taught and did teacher training at BYU Hawaii from 1980-'8- 3 where he received the Students' Choice Teacher Award for 1983. Joined the faculty at BYU-Pro- vo in the fall of 1983. He served as chairman of the Dept. of Ancient Scripture from 1985-'8- 8, was elected to Phi Phi in 1987, and was Kappa awarded the Belnap Citizenship Award of Religious Education for English, math, history, physics, geography, music (played cornet in band and cello in orchestra), science, debate, political auto mechanics, woodwork, typewriting, drafting, sports basketball, football, (played tennis, and track), and other subjects. Though there are some advantages in larger schools, he feels that anyone who takes full advantage of what Milford has to . offer will be amply provided for a productive and fulfilling life. It was with humility and heartfelt appreciation, he delivered the MHS baccalaureate address in June of 1986, on the graduating class theme, "The Best is Yet to Come." George and his wife, Norma Sumsion, have seven children and nineteen '96-'9- 7. Church service has included serving as a missionary East Central States (LDS the Sherman Mission), bishop of Oaks 2nd Ward, CA. branch and district president for the MTC in Provo, on stake high councils in Carbon Ut, East Los Angeles, Los Angeles, San Fernando, CA., Springville Ut and as president of the BYU Second Stake in Provo. service Community includes currently activity as a chairman. political precinct Publication of articles and books includes Keys Successful Scripture Study 19 Recently, in Jury of 1997 he and his wife published a 2,399 page extended-famil- y history entitled "The Small Plates of Our Family Heritage,'' which includes original writings and reminiscences by his father, mother, himself, and others about life in Milford in the '20s, '30s, and '40s about education, sports, music, work, grandchildren. Place a copy in your bank safe deposit box. Give signed copies to your doctors, family, attorneys, and to your proxy. Carry a card in your wallet informing any emergency medical personnel that you have a Living Will and where copies of it may be found. Nursing home residents should give a copy of your Living Will in your file as a permanent part of your medical record. If you are suffering from a chronic condition you might go to the hospital's social services representative, introduce yourself, explain your situation, and leave a copy of your Living Will.
