They crowded the budget hearing of the Timpanogos Special Service District on Thursday to voice concerns, once again, about the lack of work being done to control the odors emanating from the sewage treatment plant located at 5050 W. 6400 North, American Fork. . Two years ago, district Y officials gave preliminary approval ap-proval to an $85 million expansion expan-sion plan that would also deal with the odor. Now, because tragedy cut down most of this young family, fam-ily, the Christmas Eve ritual has taken on a new depth for Duane Halladay. Organizers of the annual informal in-formal Christmas Eve candlelight candle-light vigil are inviting all Utah Valley residents to gather in their local cemeteries again this Christmas Eve to light candles and luminaries for loved ones who have passed on. "A year and a half ago over spring break, my wife and kids were going to visit her sister in Colorado and she left in front of a storm," Halladay said. Because he had just started a new job, Halladay was not with them. "A microburst wind hit the car and blew it into the next lane and it hit a dump truck pulling a tractor," he said. "Everyone "Ev-eryone was killed instantly." But after two years of waiting, wait-ing, the mayor and others have had enough. "We came, we expressed our concerns. Our concerns were not addressed," Daniels said of Thursday's meeting. In the district's budget for next year is $ 100,000 for a pilot program that would attempt at-tempt to bring the smell under control. That's not going to cut it, says Dennis Baker, a property and office building owner in Pleasant Grove. He owns 140 acres in the area. The accident acci-dent happened outside of Delta, Colo. These days, Halladay said he is coping as best he can. "I'm good and bad, depends on the day," he said. He is looking forward to Christmas Eve, when he will continue a tradition started with his wife and children in 2001. His wife was teaching fourth grade when the family first started lighting candles in the cemetery. Her students made luminaries to decorate the cemetery for the event that has since become a huge annual an-nual tradition, and has spread from Salem to most of the cem eteries in Utah Valley. Each year, "before Christmas Christ-mas dinner we took the whole family and lit candles," Halladay Hal-laday said. Continuing the tradition has offered him some small measure mea-sure of healing. "This is important," he said. "This is something that she would expect and want." Of course there are mixed emotions at the cemetery. "I'm excited to do this for Tis the season of animals Christmas season tends to have an effect on hearts throughout the world. "We just need that forum to work on the causes and concerns con-cerns to why they seemingly are not addressing this." "It is a way for me to honor my family and remember remem-ber them at this time. It is a special thing." Halladay's mother passed away this year, adding one more reason for a special celebration cel-ebration at the cemetery this Christmas, he said. Thousands of people in Utah Valley now light candles in cemeteries from Goshen to Alpine Al-pine on Christmas Eve, which is just the way Brent and Reta Tischner of Salem want it. They started the tradition about a decade ago after reading read-ing a newspaper article about a similar event in a cemetery i, outside of Utah. J. "I was so inspired, I went 'to our mayor and said let's do , this," said Reta Tischner. "I . had no idea it would be so successful suc-cessful so quickly." , , ; Since the Salem community commu-nity turned out in droves in . 2001 for the first such candle-' candle-' lighting event in Utah Valley, the number of participants and 'the number of cemeteries with 'candles across Utah County has grown. The Tischners started the event to honor a son who died about 25 years of the magnificent creatures that share the earth with us homo sapiens. I am not always sure that the title "homo sapiens" is applicable ap-plicable to our species as a whole. Both homo and sapiens are Latin words; homo meaning mean-ing man, and sapiens meaning wise. When I think of all of the knuckle-headed things I have done, I think I could more aptly be categorized as a homo doofus. My dog often looks at me with greater intelligence in his eyes than I have going on in my head. When I reflect on all of the millions of creatures that populate popu-late Mother Earth I am dumbfounded dumb-founded (it doesn't take much to dumbfound a homo doofus), but even more than that I am thankful. Blake said the engineering plans for the district's expansion expan-sion are 80 percent complete and that with them will come various efforts to control the smell. "You don't build a new plant in two years," he said. The plant has also stopped composting the human waste this year (known as "huma-nure") "huma-nure") to reduce the smell but in turn lost $430,000 in revenue rev-enue from selling the stuff and had to pony up $750,000 in additional ad-ditional landfill fees. "The word is spreading and people throughout the valley are adopting it," Reta Tischner said. "It is just a tender night and it enhances Christmas Eve for all of us. It adds beauty to the night." Everything from large family groups to couples and individuals can now be found at many local cemeteries on Christmas Eve huddled around the grave of loved ones. These families are bathed in candle light that gives the cemetery a fairy glow, and they often sing carols or hymns and sometimes leave wreaths or other memorials. Some families have family prayer together. "It connects them with family fam-ily members they miss and love," she said. The Tischners said they expect ex-pect the tradition to continue to grow and spread around the valley. Their goals is to invite all residents of Utah Valley to participate, and one day they hope every cemetery in the valley will be filled with candlelight and families on Christmas Eve. thropods, reptiles, rodents and all the rest.
