Show Thursday, May 29, 2008 AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN WHO;S WHO AND om creates 21st century 'flower M Cathy Allred NORTH COUNTY STAFF Joy Smith of Lehi sells flowers flow-ers meant to endure the active lives of modern day "flower girls." Colorful silk petals that can last and hold fast in spite of a tug when clenched in a baby girl's fist or the wear and tear it receives when worn by a young girl jumping rope or driving a soccer ball to the net. Chic and Unique Boutique began with Smith's young daughters: Bailee, 8; Bergan, 6; and Brynnlee, 18 months. "I just got so tired of paying way too much money for flowers flow-ers and hair accessories for my girls," Smith said. "I never found the quality, never found the right price, and they just weren't what I expected, so I decided to make them myself." Smith said she put a spin on a traditional flower hair accessory, acces-sory, layered it, and began to create new things. "I wanted them versatile," she said of her creations. "I love making my girls feel good about who they are. I think it's important from the time they are a baby and a toddler to a young girl. They need to feel good about who they are." Flowers for her three girls soon became something friends wanted, then became a full-fledged business nearly a year ago. One flower sale grew into 7,000 flowers sold within five months. One of the best things about her flowers, Smith said, is women don't have to lose 20 pounds to look good in them. "People said 'I love it,'" Smith said. "And I love helping the moms who might not feel so confident. Throw a flower in their hair and things change. I love that. I love what the flowers bring, I do." Chic and Unique Boutique has since expanded and sells flower clips, crochet beanie hats, headbands, bows, cabby and newsboy hats, flower and NICHOLS COLLIN lllfll p iTwn n rd jvi fin 1 r i .... Teen girls appear to have taken to Smith's flowers. "Because they are so much fun and they make your hair so much easier to do," said Lehi High School sophomore Jessica Carlson. "Boys love it when you wear flowers in your hair. They are just so cute about it. They always compliment you on the flowers." '':' f j s ! (a 1 Is ! I it .
