Pool vote could come in July By BARBARA CHRISTIANSEN The new swimming pool proposed for American Fork will probably be presented to the voters for a decision deci-sion as early as July. The City Council was expected last night to set a special bond election elec-tion for July 2. Prior to the vote, citizens would be invited to a series of public hearings hear-ings to express their feelings and to learn more about the options. Architect Richard McCune has been working with the city to prepare pre-pare plans for options at the site of the old junior high school, 500 N. Center. McCune showed a summer-only pool and one covered with an inflatable inflat-able bubble for off-season use. The latter facility would also include racquetball courts and a walking track. Citizens were mailed the two options with their city bills. Over one-fifth of the surveys were returned re-turned to the city. Of those, 58 percent favored theyear-round pool and added facilities. Recreation Director Steve Bailey said the response was good. "This is a favorable response," he said. "Nearly 75 percent favored some sort of pool. Of those, 78 percent per-cent favored the expanded facility." He noted those results were similar to those from a survey conducted con-ducted by BYU several years ago. At that time the city held public hearings and presented three options op-tions to the citizens. Some of the response was negative, saying the city was not prepared to answer citizens questions. Councilman Jerry Larson said he wanted the city to have all the figures to respond to the questions. "The city had chaos at the last public hearings several years ago," he said. "We want to avoid that." McCune has prepared plans and cost estimates for the proposals and will present them at the hearings. Previous estimates placed the cost of the outdoor pool at $1,477,000 and the expanded facility at $2,133,300. Additional revenue from off-season swimmers and users of the other facilities would make up a portion of the difference. Hearing Thursday for arsonist suspect Preliminary hearing for Clark Reynolds, 26, Cedar Hills, charged in connection with haystack bombings bomb-ings in Utah County, has tentatively tenta-tively been set for Thursday, May 30, in Provo 4th Circuit Court. A court clerk said a waiver hearing hear-ing on Tuesday for Mr. Reynolds was continued. Reynolds is charged with five felony charges including two counts of arson, 2nd degree felonies; one count of arson, a 3rd degree felony; one count of possession of an infer nal machine, a 3rd degree felony; and one count of placement of an infernal machine, a 2nd degree felony. fel-ony. Circuit Court Judge Patrick McQuire set bail at $100,000 cash or bond during Mr. Reynold's first appearance on May 23. Reynolds Rey-nolds is charged in connection with the setting of 26 fires in outside haystacks and barns beginning last year and continuing through May of this year in Utah, Salt Lake, and Sanpete counties. Farmers say damages run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was arrested on May 18 by Utah County Deputy Sheriffs. Reynolds is suspected of having set fires in haystacks and barns beginning begin-ning last year that cost farmers in Utah, Salt Lake and Sanpete Counties Coun-ties hundreds of thousands of dollars. dol-lars. He was arrested and booked into Utah County Jail on May 18, after a "fairly lengthy" surveillance, Utah County Deputy Sheriff Scott Carter said. Described by officers as being a "pyromaniac," he was initially held for violation of Adult Probation and Parole regulations. He was on probation pro-bation after being convicted in 2nd District Court last year of attempted theft, a Class A misdemeanor. He appeared in 4th Circuit Court in Spanish Fork where Judge Robert Sumsion set bail at $50,000 during a bail hearing. Bill Valgardson, on knees, and Gene Reynolds prepare historic cabin for move to new site at Heritage park. Old cabin is prepared for trip to city park Community church to install new minister A historic pioneer log cabin was to be moved to its' new home in Highland this morning. Crews from the P.E. Valgardson house moving company were on hand Tuesday to prepare to move the old cabin from Louise Stice property in Highland to Heritage Park. Kathryn Schramm of the Highland High-land Camp of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, said history shows a man by the name of Harry Savill had bought the land on May 13, 1890 under the Homestead Act. In 1896, he either sold or gave the property to his wife or daughter. daugh-ter. She sold it in 1908 to John Van Streeter. He later sold the property where the cabin to William A. and Martha Bringhurst. They, in turn, sold it to Rufus J. and Alice Stice in 1912. The front part or the cabin was on it when the Stices' bought it, Mrs. Schramm said, and it wasn't until this part was being tore down in Aug. of 1990 that it was realized that the original log cabin was behind it. Boyd and Louise Stice moved into the home in 1927, living there until 1943 when Mr. Stice started building a new brick home. "I think all three of the Stices' three daughters were born in the old house," Mrs. Schramm said. Richard L Hansen, chapter president presi-dent of the Utah County Chapter of the Utah Statewide Archeological Society, said test trenches were dug around the cabin to see what physical physi-cal features and possible artifacts could be found and saved for display. dis-play. Among the items found were a silver fork stuck under the front step, the sole and heel of an old show, a clay marble, pieces of an old china doll, a key , lots of glass pieces, a little tin cup and a silver baby spoon. There was also an area enclosed by wood and with a wood bottom that was possibly used as a cooling area for milk, butter, cheese, meat, etc. Also discovered were nails of all types and sizes, including square nails. Hansen said inside there was a glass globe which was fastened to the ceiling with a chemical inside and a spring loaded mount. "When this was dropped, it would release the chemical and act as a See CABIN on page 3 On Sunday, June 2, The Rev. Dr. James R.
