Inouye, 90th The family of Yukus "Uke" Inouye In-ouye and friends of the Highland 1 1th Ward of his Church are hosting an open house to celebrate his 90th birthday. The celebration will be held in Highland at the Highland 1 1th Ward Building, 4679 W 1 100 N on Friday, April 7, 2006, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., with a program beginning at 7:30 p.m. Yukus married Mary Mitsuve Tanaka on August 30, 1938. Mary died on March 19, 1993. On November Novem-ber 16, 1996, Yukus married Betty Hisae Shiba Nakamura. Yukus and Mary are the parents of six children: chil-dren: Ronald (Linda Ushio), Scars-dale, Scars-dale, NY - Carolyn (Ken Mano), Pleasant on, CA - Donna (Keith Ca-vanaugh), Ca-vanaugh), Sandy, LT - Gerry (Paul Yamashita), Newark, CA - Jay Dee (Karen Youngstrom), Herndon, VA - Vicki (Howard Maetani), Orem, LT. Yukus and Mary have 26 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. grand-children. Betty has two children, Carol Iwasaki and Jeannie (Dale Sayama), and has 4 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. Yukus has lived in Highland since 1943 and was instrumental in developing the Highland area. He initiated the organization and building build-ing of the Alpine Country Club and the establishment of the Highland Water Company to develop the culinary water system for Highland. High-land. Yukus has recognized the importance of being involved in community service. He has served in the Boy Scouts of America organization, orga-nization, in the Farm Bureau, and as a member of the Soil Conservation Service. He served six years as a Utah County Commissioner. He has fulfilled leadership positions in The Church of Jesus Church of Latter-day Latter-day Saints, including 3 years in the Temple Presidency of the Temple in Tokyo, Japan. Yukus continues to enjoy his posterity, pos-terity, gardening, staying involved in current affairs, and serving in his Church callings. Nicholas Cook Navy Seaman Nicholas B. Cook, son of Wendy Shoemaker of California Cali-fornia and Mark Cook of American Fork, and his fellow shipmates are in the middle of a scheduled deployment deploy-ment while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, home-ported home-ported in San Diego. Cook's unit made port visits to United Arab Emirates and Australia, Austra-lia, participated in the United For Reading Program and conducted maritime security operations (MSO) in the Western Pacific. The United For Reading Program allowed Sailors to read books to their children on video tape or DVD, and mail it home. The purpose of the program is to boost family morale, mo-rale, give parental support to tl spouse left at home and ease chiid-rens' chiid-rens' fears about parental absence. Brisk, son of Jim and Sharon Brisk, has recently returned from serving two years in the Washington D.C. North Mission. He will speak in a sacrament meeting on Sunday, April 9, 2006 at 1 p.m. in the Cedar Hills 2nd Ward, Cedar Hills Stake Center, 3950 West Cedar Hills Drive. Yates, 50th Wednesday, April 5, 2006 was a day of celebration for Don M. Yates and Ora Janae Chidester Yates, marking their 50th wedding anniversary. an-niversary. Don, who grew up in Tooele County, was introduced to Janae through a blind date in 1955. After monthly visits to his girlfriend residing in Lehi, the two were married mar-ried on April 5, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. Don bought a home in Lehi in 1960 and the couple have lived there . ever since. Some of the original 1 home still exists beneath the new home that he designed and built for his wife and growing family while ' working for Geneva Steel as an electronic repairman. Following the completion of his home with a fence around his yard, Don decided he enjoyed building fences so much that he began his own business building fences for others. Even after retiring from 44 ' years of work at Geneva, he con- tinues to install chain link fences locally. After Janae gave birth to a 12.5 pound baby boy, she felt that her child-bearing had reached completion comple-tion with a total of seven children, five boys and two girls who, over the years have provided the couple with a current count of 18 grandchildren grand-children and four great grandchildren. grandchil-dren. Don recently enjoyed his 70th birthday last month and Janae is somewhat younger. During the past 50 years, Don and Janae have enjoyed taking their family on yearly camping trips to the High Uintahs. They have traveled trav-eled across the country and have toured parts of South America, Europe, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. In January, the cheerful couple celebrated their golden anniversary early with all seven of their children and spouses, by boarding a cruise ship for a week-long excursion into the Caribbean, visiting several of the Virgin Islands. Their children and grandchildren are thrilled to congratulate Don and Janae Yates for all the exciting years they have spent together and hope that joy and happiness win fill the lives of their parents for decades de-cades to come. Smith, a 1997 graduate of American Fork High School recently graduated gradu-ated from the US. Coast Guard Recruit Training Center in Cape May, N.J. During the eight -week training program. Smith completed a vigorous vigor-ous training curriculum consisting of academics and practical instruction instruc-tion of water safety and survival, military customs and courtesies. Christopher Callis Air Force Maj. Christopher J. Callis, who is currently deployed overseas at a forward-operating location lo-cation in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, has been decorated with the Meritorious Service MedaL The medal is awarded to members mem-bers of the U.S. Armed Forces who distinguish themselves by either outstanding achievement or meritorious merito-rious service to the United States in noncombat situations. Callis, a security forces chief with nine years of military service, is normally assigned to the Pentagon, Washington, D.C He is the son of John and Kathy Callis of Saratoga Springs. The newly promoted major graduated in 1989 from Hillcrest High School, Midvale, and received a bachelor's degree in 1996 from Brigham Young University, Provo. He earned a master's degree in 2002 from the University of Phoenix, Las Vegas Campus, Nev. seamanship skills, first aid, lire fighting and marksmanship. Smith and other recruits also received instruction on the Coast Guard's core values - honor, respect re-spect and devotion to duty - and how to apply them in their military performance and personal conduct. Burton (Bud) Black was born in Richfield, Utah in 1914 and moved to the city for work during WWII. Tom, born Draper, Petersen Dee Harold and Vickie Draper of Cedar Fort are pleased to announce the marriage of their daughter Ch-antelle Ch-antelle Draper to Jack Cade Petersen, Peters-en, son of Todd and Sherri Petersen of Riverton. The couple will be married on Friday, April 7. 2006 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
