UTAH COUNTY BIDS TO BECOME SECOND IN STATE 8AY8 REPORT OF F. W, KIRKHAM. Another step of importance towards the consumatlon of the, Lake Utah reclamation project was taken the past week when data relative to Irrl gatlon problems in Utah and Salt I.ake counties was sent to Washing ton, n. c, in reHponseno a request made by Senator Roed Smootj: - who will It Is belioved attempt to secure federal reclamation services for the project now contemplated, sometime within the near future. Provo men are cooperating In the work to supply data' for the fact find-ing,lxxttTmUlon find-ing,lxxttTmUlon . now la session and A. E. Jacob has forwarded maps and other data to Senator 8moot. F. W. Klrkhara of the temporary organization committee In Salt Lake county in his letter sent Senator Smoot Saturday says in effect: "Salt Lake county contains about 55 '"'percent of the population of the state of Utah and about 43 percent of its wealth. Utah county is the third county in Importance in ,. the state and at present bids rapidly to become second through the develop ment of the steel Industry. In many products, these counties do, not yet produce sufficient for the local mark et. Recently they were compared by Field Commissioner Miles "Cannon' to the most favored sections of California, Cali-fornia, Washington and Oregon. "There is no possible doubt as -to the ability of this land and Ha owners own-ers to repay any reasonable reclamation reclama-tion cost. This, we take It, Is the essential es-sential requisite for additional expenditure ex-penditure by governmental funds. As positive proof of this contention two private water companies have soKl in the past eight years $1,500,000 worth of water to some 800 or 1000 farmers In these counties." Regarding the various units of the proposed project Mr. Klrkham atates that the Strawberry project covers land in the south end of Utah conn' ty. Surplus water in the Strawberry reservoir could be carried north from SpringvlUe, about four miles, to Provo river and furnish the West Union and lake bottom canals, which canals now irrigate lands In the north end of the county. The water from these canals could by this ex change be placed In canals already built or to be built "Additional water to permit of the exchange can be obtained by pump ing from Utah lake and by storage on Provo river, depending on relative costs of drainage and pumping and upon the demand for storage water in Salt Lake county," says Mr. Klrkham. Klrk-ham. "To permit of this reclamation the Provo bench and lake bottom canals should be extended north to the Jordan river." "The canals to be built from American Ameri-can Fork canyon and Alpine to cover the highest lands' In Utah valley are similar canals,"" say s the reportr"ln fact, this reclamation of Utah county Is the cheapest and most desirable of any In Utah, In my opinion, except for one reason, the lands in Salt Lake Valley are comparable because the additional ad-ditional cost of canals in this county Is no' more than the additional valua of the lands, due to the closer proximity of Salt Lake City, the mining min-ing towns and the markets. " - Regarding acreage and cost In Utah county Mr. Klrkbam states that the Moslda pumping plant and canal covers 1 4.000 to 25,000 acres and the cost U estimated by reclamation service ser-vice on 14,000 acres at $85. The cost estimated on 20,000 acres by private owners cooperating with Alberta landowners is set at $40 an acre. Drainage of lands, south from Provo to the west mountains, directly direct-ly affected by the Strawberry pro JeCt. Is not estimated by Mr. Kirk- nam. ine drainage or m.uvu acres of land north from Provo river tc Jordan rlvor below Plo-inant Grove, American Fork" and I-chl, Is set at from $7.."0 to $20 per acre. Fu'lv one-half of this area can be supplied by recovery of underground water states the report, whilo tho remainder remaind-er by pumpini; from Utah lake need not cost to exceed $40 an acre. .. -'for -10,000 aors -on -higher land In Utah county an early water supply sup-ply will he very Inexpensive not e-ceoillhg e-ceoillhg $25 to $40 an acre, for li to 2 aero feet, Reservoir water on Preve river now rtrtlmatrd nt I HA nn ncre feet," st.ites the report forward ed Senator Smoot .The maps sent to Washington show the- Rreat amount of available lnnd reclamation, Its unexretlod poi 8lMlitUs, nnd other , tnattor noron AMERICAN sary for the consideration of the federal fed-eral reclamation service. "When I got througlrwhiz- zing, through tho air . for scenes in the photoplay 1 was ready to sit still for the rest of my life.
