Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS - Thursday, April 29, 1982 - Page Eight Spotlight on People Hasel by Lee Dalton awfully hard to interview Hazel Honey because she has so many demands on her Its time that she doesnt sit still for very long. Hazel is the Coconino County community services worker in Fredonia. Shes the only county services worker in Fredonia besides the Justice of the Peace and Justice Court Clerk and her responsibility spans a wide area. While I was trying to interview Hazel, she was visited by a person needing help in probating a will, another needing help with a food stamp application, one needing help in repairing some leaking plumbing and one seeking assistance in obtaining energy assistance also program help. She provides assistance of many kinds to people from Mojave County because Mojave has no one available to help their residents north of the big ditch. The telephone kept ringing and at one point she had an animated discussion with a telephone operator who refused to believe she was calling from Arizona because the call was passing through a Utah switchboard. Much of Hazels work is with Fredonias senior citizens. She runs a hot meal program for them in which three hot meals are provided each week for people who might otherwise have difficulty preparing any. Some of the seniors come for the meals to the trailer recently provided to Fredonia by the county, but Hazel takes many of the meals to the homes of those for whom travel is too difficult or who are ill at the time. She assists by providing transportation for those who can no longer drive to medical appointments or the grocery store and by arranging medical appointments. She picks up and delivers prescriptions and helps several with housecleaning now that housecleaning has become too much for them. Hazel is often called upon to help find legal advice and provide consumer protection for people who are traditionally preyed upon by various shady operators. She tries to educate them and warn them of the multitude of schemes designed to separate senior citizens from their money and tries to help them when they need it in resisting sales pitches. She tends to the seniors in times of minor illness and seeks help for them when illness becomes major or chronic. She also provides help to younger people in need as the only social services represene in Fredonia. tative And for all of this, according to Ivan Goodall who represents the Fredonia seniors on the regional council on aging, Hazel Honey is paid less than current minimum wage. Ivan warms up quickly to It the subject as he says, would be absolutely impossible to find a more conscientious and dedicated person than Hazel. Since she has been curtailed in what she is allowed to do she spends a lot of her own time to provide the service people need. "She was told a while ago that she could make only one trip to Kanab a week to take people to medical appointments and only one trip a month to St. George. But since we cant all schedule when were going to be sick, she often takes her own time and money to take people to St. George or Kanab on Saturday in her own car. Goodall says No, sir, you couldnt emphatically, find a better person anyplace. Why, she even gets up in the middle of the night to help. She does such things as going out at all hours to help a person who has contact lenses after cataract surgery put in or remove her contacts. Goodall really fires up when he begins talking about the disparity between services provided senior citizens in Flagstaff and those provided in Fredonia. The newest firefighter on the tailboard has been designated to take the hydrant. He drops off, hydrant wrench in one hand, the end of a heavy hose in the other. A quick wrap around the hydrant and the engine drives off laying hose behind it. The hydrant person will attach the hose and turn water immediately into it. The engineer spots the engine and the officer bails out calling to the people on the tailboard for the size and number of hoses to be used in the attack. The officer then makes contact with the property owner or bystanders, decides on the point of entry to reach the fire and turns to help the firefighters. One of the firefighters on the back has grabbed the hose clamp and attached it to the supply hose that stretches back to the hydrant. Two of them are already reaching inside a compartment and are shrugging into the harnesses of breathing apparatus. The water from the hydrant hits the hose clamp and stops. The engineer watches while the first attack lines are pulled from special beds where they are preconnected, ready for instant use. As soon as the hoses are clear of the bed and stretched out, he turns water into them from the trucks tank. Then he turns attention to connecting the supply hose from the hydrant to the pumps intake port. Once the water supply has been established, he will refill the trucks tank to hold a reserve of water in case anything happens to the supply line. The officer helps the hose team pull the hose to the point of entry, directs them inside and begins commanding the other aspects of the attack. At this point, about one minute and thirty seconds has elapsed from the time the fire engines wheels stopped rolling at the fire scene.
