Show pioneer passes away at silver city 0 oscar wilkins old time resident ot of tintic gintic passed away at bis his home in silver city on sunday evening of this week at the ripe old age ot of 77 years mr wilkins was stricken with paralysis while attending the black hawk war veterans encamp ment bent at richfield about two weeks ago and due to his advanced age he was unable to withstand the shock prior to this he had enjoyed good health mr wilkins was a son of john C and nancy kennedy wilkins he was born in handcock county III on may 6 1844 his ills parents bad had joined the L D S church and when he was but three days of age the family home at nauvoo illinois was burned by a mob the mother and baby being carried out and corn com polled to seek quarters elsewhere mr wilkins came to utah with his parents in 1849 being with the earliest settlers 0 of utah and making the trip across the plains by hand cart when a oung young man he assist ed in publishing one of the first newspapers put out in provo but tor for the last twenty five years he had bad made bis his home almost continuously at silver city following mining dur ing the greater part of that time in 1876 he married mary jane mcewan by whom ha he had eleven children she died ten years ago the following children survive mrs F R rozelle mrs N H tanner and mrs W E evans of salt lake mrs mert karren of provo mrs perry B fuller and R A wilkins of silver city also thirty one grand children and tour four great granach grandc hll 1 I 1 dren one sister nancy W colton of 0 vernal the mother of congress man don B colton and a brother john wilkins of provo mr wilkins was a member of the L D S church was honorable and upright ever willing to extend a helping hand he ile will be greatly missed by his countless friends funeral services were held at the first ward meeting house in prove provo on wednesday afternoon a large number of people from tin gintic tintic ti c at tending |
