NOTICE TO Behind Your Telephone The telephone on your desk or on the wall indicates little of the plant and organization necessary to make it function. Along country highways, underneath city streets and housed in our central office buildings are millions of dollars worth of poles, wires, cables and equipment, all necessary to make service from your telephone adequate, efficient and dependable. In addition to the physical requirements there is an army of trained men and women, each with a share in the task of maintaining and operating the plant, and each with determination that telephone service shall be continuous and satisfactory. RETAIL CREDIT MAN - Pleading with his hearers to make the telephone a business partner' Henry Baines of St. Joseph, Mo., in a recent address before the ninth annual convention of the Retail Credit Men's National Association, at Houston, Texas, paid a high tribute to the telebusiphone as a factor in an up-to-da- te ness organization. A telephone, said Mr. Raines, after describing at length his system of collecting accounts and keeping tabs on credit listings for a large dry goods house, is always on the job. It is never late to work, never asks for a vacation, never complains of overwork, never reports 'Nobody Home when it hasnt called, never goes to ball games, never has to be bonded and never hangs out in pool halls. Declaring that the successful use of the telephone in business, and particularly in the credit end of the ness, depends upon courtesy, tact, papaytience, persistence, expecting ments when promised and leting the customer know, you are watching the account, Mr. Raines asserted that few of his customers object to the use of the telephone in speeding up collections. If I find customers who object to my calling them about their account, he is quoted as saying, I say to them, Which would you prefer, having a collector call at your home and dun you, or having the credit department call you by the phone, reminding your of your account? He adds that many customers request that the firm call them on the telephone instead of sending collectors. It has not employed a collector in two years. P RO B AT E AND GTMRDTaN SHI P NOTICE8.
