Show THE REFORMED COMMISSION The Utah Commission no matter what may be said by some Republicans to the contrary is organized on the lines contemplated in the Edmunds Act which created it That is to say there are only three out of the five members who belong to the same political party The trouble with some radical Republicans Repub-licans is that the three this time are Democrats Ever since the morning Obituary lost control of the Commission it has been in tribulation Its bowels have been in pafn and its temper has been in a tumult That body jumped for so many years as it pulled the string that it became be-came imbued with the notion that the Commission was a sort of attachment oo its qstablishment That illusion has been rudely dispelled Hence its anguish and amazement that neither its orders nor its suggestions receive the slightest attention Two years ago an atempt was made by the only real Democrat in that body to obtain an arrangement by which the two political parties should have representation on the lists of registration officers He was voted down and a precedent was made which the present Commission is following after referring to the record The morning Obituary approved the decision then but strongly dissents from it now Why is this thus Simply because the Democrats are in the majority on the Commission and in the first place that makes all the difference with the Obituary and in the second place that organ has no say in the matter As It is never guided by principle of course it cannot see that if the rule was right I two years ago it is right today and so it has no end of bitterness to let loose on the Democratic Commissioners for acting on the precedent set by their republican re-publican predecessors It is quite natural for the Obituary to suspect the present registrars to be desirous de-sirous of following the villainous tactics of the registrars whom the Obituary upheld up-held In all their deviltry four years ago and more But its ravings uc not count The officers appointed should perform their duty fairly and fearlessly without regard to any mans political affiliations affilia-tions nad give us a complete honest and reliable registration We believe they will do so We are sure that the Commission desire this and will endeavor to assure it And by the Commission we mean all its members Democratic and Republican Thank heaven neither are now under the thumb or at the end of the string of the wailing dejected and ejected Obituary |
