Give them to people who are really hungry. Every month 20,000 people in the Salt Lake Valley alone, request emergency food assistance. An additional 20,000 are fed statewide. Of those, 39 percent are children. Every year thousands of pounds of fresh produce from fields. orghards, and home garsens arw not uses and thus spoils, Utah State University and Master Extension, 4-Gardeners in Salt Lake County have collaborated together with the Utah Food Bank and local garden centers to sponsor a Fresh From the Heart Food Drive. The goal of the food drive is to collect excess produce from gardens, farms and fruit trees and donate it to the Utah Food Bank network of food banks and food pantries through out the Fresh produce is state. refrigerated and distrubuted through the DROPS program at 21 sites throughout the state. Each location serves between 150 to 300 households. Produce can be dropped at six area garden centers during throughout September. Volunteer Master Gardeners will pick up the produce on Wendesday evenings and Saturday mornings at 11:30 a m. and deliver it to the Utah Food Bank. The Utah Food Bank also accepts produce donations year round during their regular business hours. Local Paricipating Garden Centers include: Western Garden Centers 4050 W 4 100 Sin West Valley 550 S 600 E, Salt Lake City Milcreek Gardens 3500 S 900 E. Salt Lake City County clerk to tour senior centers Seniors in the area will be able to learn about upcoming elections during the annual tour of senior centers by Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen. Swensen will provide election information and inform senior citizens, especially those with certain needs, about the programs and equipment available to assist them in voting. Swensen will visit the Kearns Senior Center, 4850 West 4715 South, on Sept 13 at 11 a.m.; The Magna Senior Center, 8952 West 2700 South on Sept 18 at 11 a.m. and the Hannon Home Community Center, 4095 South 3600 West on Oct 10 at 11 visits, Swenson will talk about Voter Registration and provide seniors with an opportunity to register to vote; present a demonstrations punch card voting, straight party voting and scratch voting; discuss Former Granger residents, Ron and Dora Dene Palmer would like to announce the celebration of their 50th Golden Wedding Anniversary.
