NBA STANDINGS Talented Sonics too much for Bobcats THt ASSOCIATED ', PRESS - Seattle CHARLOTTE, N.C. scored inside, outside and at the line. In the end, the Charlotte Bobcats just couldn't match it. Rashard Lewis scored 27 points and Seattle made in the SuperSonics' EASTERN CttNFE&ENCE ATLANTIC DIVISION 1. . victory over the Bobcats on Friday night. Vladimir Radmanovic scored " 21 points on shooting from range, and Ray Allen added 18 points for the lead Sonics, who blew a before rallying for the win. "They played a pretty good game, but at ROUNDUP the end of the ' day, we just had too many answers for them," Allen said. The Sonics scored 42 points in the paint, shot 50 percent from range and missed just four free throws to move to a surprising 22-"No one expected us to be in this position," coach Nate McMillan said. "These guys do things the right way and we're making plays." The Bobcats, who dropped their fourth straight, were certainly impressed. "They kept on putting them , up and they kept on dropping," said rookie Emeka Okafor. "I'd say they are the best team we've played." But the Bobcats felt they played pretty well, too, and coach Bernie Bickerstaff thought the officials played too large a role in the outcome. Seattle went to the line 10 times in the fourth quarter, and Charlotte didn't get a single free throw opportunity. "I may be biased, but the 12 guys in that room deserve better than that," Bickerstaff said. "It appears when we got back in the game, every play whether it was a defensive play or an offensive play, (Seattle) got a second chance." Okafor led the Bobcats with 27 points and a career-higalso had 10 rebounds, the final one coming with 16 seconds to play to extend his streak of double-double- s to 18 consecutive games. The Bobcats welcomed back guard Brevin Knight and center Primoz Brezec after both missed games with the flu as Charlotte dropped three straight. Both gave the Bobcats an immediate Uft, Knight with 15 assists before he fouled out late in the fourth quarter, and Brezec with 22 points and nine rebounds. h .552 Philadelphia 13 15 .464 Boston 13 16 .448 New Jersey 10 18 .357 10 21 .323 7 7 3 84 7 GB MO Str Home Away Conf 12 3 124 18-- 2 94 68 6--7 8 11-- 8 . 87-7- Utah managed to cut the at the 8:54 Kings' lead to mark, thanks to a from Raul Lopez followed by a Curtis Borchardt layup and a Kirk Snyder steal and layup, But Stojakovic then heated up. Top 10 Continued from Cl gold medal Rulon Gardner, who hails from Wyoming but always seems to be in Utah, retired after winning a bronze. BYU graduate Guard Young helped the United States capture a silver medal in men's gymnastics. Maybe now people won't just think of John Stockton and Karl Malone when they think of Utah athletes. 8. And speaking of basketball ... lot- tery, being selected with the No. 8 pick in this year's draft. The big fella' headed to Toronto, where he has found himself in a very unfamiliar spot onthebench. Washington's Larry Hughes tied a season high with 33 points, from shooting range. Antawn Jamison added 29. Wizards scoring leader Gilbert Arenas missed the game because of flulike symptoms. Boozer and Keith McLeod kept the Jazz close. They each scored eight points in the quarter, but after a Boozer jumper cut the lead to 107-9- 9 with 42 seconds remaining, Webber finished off the Jazz with another dunk. "Sometimes things happen where for whatever reason, you have an ability to beat the other team," said Sacramento coach Rick Adelman. "We know when we come here they'll play hard and they'll come at us and we're usually ready to play." In addition to nine straight wins in Utah, Sacramento after his semifinal because he refused to play on the Sabbath. The action (or inaction?) made national headlines as even the most devout LDS members debated whether Miller's actions were thoughtful or thoughtless. 6. The Angels find a home , Minor league baseball will still be around, just not in Provo. The Provo Angels built a new home, at UVSC, and found new ownership. With that came a new name, the Orem Owlz. Hey, why only one Z? The new ownership group showed at its press conference that it has a lot to learn about the locals after joking that it offered season tickets to entice Utah football coach Urban Meyer to stay in the state. ' That quip should make them red in the face in Cougar Country- 5. BYU athletic department fire-sid- e In September the BYU brass hastily fired athletic directors Elaine Michaelis and Val Hale. On the first day of December, after another losing season, it was football head coach Gary won 14 of the last 17 games with the Jazz. "I thought we had a wonderful chance to win the game," Boozer said. "But Chris Webber got hot in the third quarter and we dug ourselves a hole and we couldn't get over the hump." Utah led by as many as nine points in the first half. Boozer scored nine points in the second quarter to help the Jazz to a 7 lead with 8:37 left in the half , but Miller scored nine points in the quarter to help the Kings go into the locker room tied at 53. Has now 36-2- t Crowton's time to go. All three victims have survived. Michaelis, who planned on retiring at the end of the year anyway, is still attending games. Crowton will no doubt land on his feet at another program. Hale is now at UVSC and also writing a Sunday newspaper column. Meanwhile, the athletic department is still being run by four people and the school expects to narrow its search to one in the near future. 4. The Utes Fiesta forever It is here that we're reminded of a great joke. Q: Why did the chicken cross the road? A: To show the opossum it could be done. That's what the Utes football team did this year show BYU that getting to a BCS game is possible. The formula is simple: Have a good tearrt, a schedule that can be handled (read: no defending national champions, or other unbeaten powers) and, of course, just win baby. i 3.
