Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, September 3-6, 2005 The Park Record A-28 Cash donations sough WASHINGTON, D.C, - Voluntary organizations are seeking cash donations to assist victims of Hurricane Katrina in Gulf Coast states, according to Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security f o r Emergency Preparedness and Response. But, volunteers should not report directly to the affected areas unless directed by a voluntary agency. "Cash donations are especially helpful to victims," Brown said. "They allow volunteer agencies to issue cash vouchers to victims so they can meet their needs. Cash donations also allow agencies to avoid the labor-intensive need to store, sort, pack and distribute donated goods. Donated money prevents, too, the prohibitive cost of air or sea transportation that donated goods require." Volunteer agencies provide a wide variety of services after disasters, such as clean up, childcare, housing repair, crisis counseling, sheltering and food. "We're grateful for the outpouring of support already," Brown said. "But it's important that volunteer response is coordinated by the professionals who can direct volunteers with the appropriate skills to the hardesthit areas where they are needed most. Sclf-dispaiched volunteers and especially sightseers can put themselves and others in harm's way and hamper rescue efforts." Here is a list of phone numbers set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers. WHEELER MediaNews Group Wire Service Don't beat yourself up if you are . 35 and still living with roommates. Having roommates isnt just a staple of college living anymore. More adults in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s now view shared living ^arrangements as an economic option when good-paying jobs can be hard to find and housing costs are sky-high. Many of these adults also seek to fill an emotional void and stay connected. Divorce, a decline in marriage rates and the trend of marrying later are forcing many adults to live alone when they may not want to. For Walton Duffey, 35, and Anne Shepard, 33, his roommate off and on for five years, living together was a financial decision that netted them a lifelong friendship. Duffey of Denver wanted to buy a house with plenty of space, but he didn't want to be house-poor and constantly strapped for cash. Shepard wanted to sell her home in Longmont, Colo., so she could live in Denver. After attending a seminar hosted by a millionaire buddy about strategies for getting rich, Duffey and Shepard decided to take their buddy's advice: If you can't buy a home by yourself, you might as well buy with somebody else. Having known each other for only six months, the pair took a risk and bought a condo together in late 2000. "We both just realized that we couldn't get the kind of place we wanted in the location we wanted without help," Duffey says. "There's more and more people out there who want to be able to buy a place," says Shepard, who has had roommates since she was 23. "At the time, it made sense. We qualified for way more house together than we would have alone, and we had more equity going into it."
