"It sure would be nice if they got in the habit of using crosswalks." The subject of student-pedestrian safety is particularly timely, in context of the student who was run over and killed on Monday at Hunter High School in West Valley City. Park City School District has four schools on Kearns Blvd. - the high school, McPolin Elementary School, the Park City Learning Center, and Treasure Mountain International School. Total student population of these schools is about 2,000. Grade realignment is aggravating the situation on because of increased busing requirements: Treasure Mountain and high school students are bused on the same vehicles. "It's a little more complex this year, we've got so many buses," said Kuennen. Last year, eight buses came to Treasure Mountain at a time, whereas now its 14. A wave of seven buses comes to the high school and drops some of its students off, then continues to Treasure Mountain and drops off the rest. At the same time, a different wave of seven comes to Treasure Mountain first, then continues to the high school, Kuennen explained. "That intersection is really pounded," he said. Park City sophomore Mike Gonzalcs said the lack of crosswalks on Kearns Boulevard irritates him. In the school area, there are only two: the one connecting the LDS Seminary building and 12,000 plus square feet* of total custom built luxury GRAYSON WEST/PARK RECORD Above: Park City High School students Mike Gonzales, Eddie McHugh, and Chayce Helms jay walk after school on Wednesday. "There's nothing to slow down the traffic." The neighborhoods across Kearns Blvd. are "where most of the kids come from," and despite rules against jaywalking "they do it anyway," Gonzales continued. Sophomore Eddie McHugh said using the crosswalks is "so inconvenient, you have to." "There's kids running in front of dump trucks and city buses and it's not safe,"' McHugh said. "There's more they (city and school officials) could do about it, they just don't." One solution McHugh suggested is different lanes for buses and cars on Kearns during school hours. Getting hit by any car would hurt." Reduced speeds can actually make; crossing more attractive, if students think they can slip past slower cars better than they could fast ones.
