Park City mom is moving mountains At 20-somclliing. most mothers are running after small children. At 30-something, they are running to soccer practice. At 40-something. they are running to make up for 20 years of reduced physical activity. So how does one describe one Park City mother just over 40. but far from over-the-hill, who just entered a 50mile trail run? Some say crazy. All in a day's work, says Nancy Hendrickson about a marathon many consider lo be the second hardest in the country. r fhis mother of two with a twoday-a-weck. job that often turns into six as program administrator for the National Sports Foundation (NSF), is running the Squaw Peak 50-Mile Trail Run in Provo Canyon June 4. The run is not just a personal challenge for Hendrickson, but also a means to raise money for NSFs ski jumping and cross-country athletes whose families struggle to come up with training fees. Although Hendrickson has been training since last December for this double marathon, she entered late and was nearly turned away. 200 race slots and the prospect of a 5 a.m. start time, only to face 10.000 feel of vertical gain and loss with five major climbs of up lo 3.000 feet. Since Hendrickson "loves" lo run, however, she was ecstatic to get the call to say that she is in. Not only does Hendrickson love running, she also loves ski jumping and cross-country skiing. She was introduced to it growing up in New Hampshire where she met her husband. Bill, a former ski jumper. They have two children, Sarah. 10. and Nick, 13, both Nordic-combined athletes who train with nearly 100 Park City area youth at the Utah Olympic Park. One might say the competitive gene runs in the family as both kids excel at their sports. Hendricksons friends say modesty also runs in the family gene p<xil. In preparation for the upcoming race. Hendrickson recently ran a pentathlon in Steamboat Springs, Colo, coining in several minutes ahead of an IS yearold to win the race. When her friends asked how she did. Hendrickson responded. "I did alright." • Disappointment is not the term most would use in being excluded from Although she docs not expect to win any titles in the Squaw Peak trail run, she does expect to finish in 14 hours, a feat she sarcastically calls "a full day." Her goal is to raise $100 per mile or $5,000 total. Hendrickson is asking those interested in supporting her and the young athletes she intends to help by pledging any amount per mile-from a dollar on up or any amount if she finishes the race. All donations. 100 percent, will go lo bolster the NSF Scholarship Fund for young athletes. Hendrickson has been logging 70 miles per week recently and expects to top out at 80 or 90 miles in the next week or two. This weekend she will run the Moab Marathon for a bit of hot weather education. "I truly love running." says Hendrickson. "It brings me to a peaceful place even though I am usually thinking about NSF and how I can help make the program even belter for all the young athletes involved." "'{"here are several NSF athletes who aspire to be Ihe best in the sport." adding, "if I can meet my personal goal and at the same time help those athletes lo reach for the stars and make their dream to come I rue. its all worth it." In response to Hendricksons efforts, NSF Executive Director Greg Poirier said. "Hendrickson is a very special person lo all at NSF, and we thank her for all her contributions, but this contribution to the scholarship fund is truly unique. On June 4th. she will take her place of honor alongside our top sponsors including VISA. U.S. Bank and the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation. We wish her the very best of luck." When asked what Hendrickson hopes to find al the end of her race, she responded. "A pot of gold for the scholarship fund and a wheelchair." 'Hie NSF staff asks those interested to spread ihe word and pledge their intention to support Hendrickson by e-mail ing nsfnews^ xniission.com.
