The Toaster is the star of this story, as he leads some of his appliance ap-pliance friends, Blankey (an electric elec-tric blanket), Lampy (a desk lamp) and Kirby (a vacuum cleaner), on a search for their master, who has apparently abandoned them. The story makes use of the characters' various appliance psyches, creating situations fit for appliances, complete with music only appliances could make. The film, directed by Jerry Rees, features the voice of John Lovitz, of Saturday Night Live. Break of Dawn Some of the most exciting cinema is based in truth. "Break of Dawn" is a story of racial tension ten-sion based on part of the life of Chicano Pedro Gonzales, a Depression-era radio host in Southern California. Gonzales gave the Mexican community a voice, and he became a powerful political ally, helping shape and mirror the opinions opi-nions of the Mexican community in Southern California. Tension between cultures, however, leads police to falsely arrest Gonzales, forcing his wife to organize the Mexican community com-munity to help free him. Hairspray What would this world do without John Waters? How would underground film fanatics satisfy their urges for the bizzare, sometimes sick, and always unusual? In his eleventh film, E$ose yourself to music so revolutionary it was held captive by the Russians. When Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings was premiered in Kiev in 1945, a mesmerized Russian audience refused to leave the concert hall until it was performed per-formed again. Later, it was played over American airwaves to mourn the death of Franklin Roosevelt. On January 23, the Utah Symphony Chamber Orchestra brings this magnificent piece to life, along with other stirring classics written for chamber orchestra. Experience Haydnshow-piece Haydnshow-piece for cello and orchestra, his entry to the festival. "Hairspray," Waters offers another film which defies logic and features that immense transvestite, Divine. While Waters' plots are eccentric, eccen-tric, he does have a social conscience, cons-cience, and in "Hairspray" he winds his plot around the integration in-tegration of 1962 Baltimore. To sum up the plot would be pointless. A film which features Sonny Bono, Debbie Harry (rock singer 'Blondie'), and Pia Zadora, and which revolves around "The Corny Collins Dance Show" should need little introduction. in-troduction. Heat and Sunlight "Heat and Sunlight" is a small film with big ambition. It seeks to chronicle the final sixteen hours of a relationship between a photo-journalist photo-journalist and his dancerchoreographer girlfriend. The lead role, Mel, played by director Rob Nilsson, goes through a series of mental contor-tions contor-tions over the impending breakup, finally seeming on the verge of a breakdown. Once his friends convince him to confront Carmen, his girlfriend, the result is funny, sexy, and, at last, cathartic. This black and white production produc-tion features music from Brian Eno and David Byrne's, "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts." Lemon Sky American Playhouse, in association with PBS station WGBHBoston, presents a production pro-duction of Pulitzer-prize winning author Lanford Wilson's play, "Lemon Sky." The play is about a young man's (Kevin Bacon) attempts to re-enter his estranged father's life, having been abandoned by him ten years earlier. Cello Concerto No. 1 in D Major, composed to celebrate the wedding of a prince and princess in 1783. Master Utah Symphony cellist J. Ryan Selberg performs as soloist. Also featured is Josef Suk's Serenade for Strings in E-flat Major. Suk composed this scintillating scintil-lating serenade at the tender age of 18, while still a student of an even more famous Czech composer, Anton Dvorak. Patti Rocks David Burton Morris is well-known well-known in independent circles for his critically acclaimed film, "Loose Ends," and he is offering a sequel to the film, "Patti' Rocks," for this year's drama competition. In "Patti Rocks," Billy, the wise-ass con-man from "Loose Ends," and Eddie, the more sedate, but potentially wild character, team up again. This time, it is to go visit a woman Billy Bil-ly has impregnated, despite his having a wife and two children. The two embark on an long trip to the other woman's home, and Billy takes advantage of his captive cap-tive audience, telling Eddie of his sexual exploits and fantasies. Billy's bragging, however, is off-set by the movies male-female male-female encounters, creating a feel of emotional gravity coupled with humor, both of which deepen as the film progresses. i i Promised Land As technology speeds major cities along, with instant communications com-munications bringing us ever closer to the global community concept, small communities are losing their identity, and their citizens are often plagued by existential ex-istential questions as a result. The movie "Promised Land'.' is a monument to the lost dreams of the country's heartland. Shot in Utah, the film is heavy with small-town ambiance. It is a story of small-town high school students who grow up for a based on an ancient English country tune of the same name. Played by Edward James Olmos, the teacher is assigned to a high school in East Los Angeles to teach math to a class of unruly Latinos. Entertained by his unusual sense of humor, the students come to repect their teacher, and they soon find the desire to learn from him.. The movie also contains a powerful social comment through the disbelief the teacher must face from the education community, com-munity, which refuses to accept the students' standardized test scores, accusing them of cheating. 1 ...
