ERIC SMITH State essay winners By DONETA GATHERUM SALT LAKE CITY Two Davis County secondary school students placed first in their grade division in the Martin Luther King Jr. essay contest, sponsored by the Utah State Office of Education, the Educational Equity Unit and the University of Utah. First place for seventh grade was awarded to Cheryl Ann Price, a student at Central Davis Junior High School in Layton. The 11th grade first place prize went to Eric Smith, a student at Woods Cross High School. Eric also placed second in the grand prize competition. competi-tion. In addition to receiving certifi- cates and cash awards, the two prize winning students were guests of honor at a luncheon held in the Union Building at the University of Utah. The keynote address was given by The Honorable Andrew Young, mayor of Atlanta, Ga. The purpose of the state-wide essay contest open to all secondary school students was to help "young people continue to find new meaning and application for the legacy Dr. King left to the world in the area of Human and Civil Rights." All essays were 500 words of less and reflected thoughts on racial injustice, human rights, sexual discrimination, economic eco-nomic exploitation, voting rights and other related topes. |
