Show NOT THE SENTIMENT OF CIVIC CLUB president george palmer of the blue mountain civic dub club takes exceptions to the record publishing the expressions pres indulged in by certain members at the meeting held last week as the position of the civic club in relation to agriculture in this county we are glad indeed to have president palmer express himself this way and to know that there were others present at the meeting who did not share the sentiments expressed the fact that only negative views were voiced naturally led our reporter to believe that this was the unanimous position of the club since he was particular to call for an expression ot of the club on the subject and two other propositions submitted and now with the paid up membership more than doubled since the last meeting we hope for a more optimistic and affirmative attitude at the session of the club on the second monday in march lets all keep this date in mind and see that there is a representative crowd out and help to proclaim to the world the advantages of san juan county with our matchless scenery salubrious climate fertile soil and splendid ranges for livestock it is not in the picture to assume that the largest county in utah and one of the largest counties in the whole united states can much longer ie be monopolized by so few people remember that the earth is gods that he has many children who must have a place to live and let us not take too seriously our prior occupancy and tenancy the march of civilization challenges the right of so few people to hold and monopolize so large a terrain and in order to enjoy the modern advantages and conveniences of civilization we need more people to make paved sidewalks and streets sewer and adequate water systems feasible with the advance of civilization comes certain adjustments and compensations and the wise man is the one who recognizes these i inexorable e facts and shapes his course in a way to take advantage of them as they creep upon us or come with a rush as they sometimes do there are failures in every walk of life and there are those who are successful farming in san juan county is no exception to the rule theorize the prize of 1000 for the heaviest yield of oats was won in this county there have been phenomenal yields of dry land wheat on the other hand particularly during the recent drought period there were many failures and disappointments and this has been the lot of the agriculturist from the days of ancient egypt down to the present time an isolated farm in a new country is beset by jack rabbits prairie dogs vermin and rodents of various kinds grasshoppers crickets and other plagues and many are the filings that are abandoned after one two or perhaps half a dozen years but someone else comes along and makes a success where the first and perhaps the second or third occupant failed further there are good tracts and there are poor ones often failures are due to insufficient capital which is one of the commonest causes for failure in any line of endeavor some are due to poor judgment in the selection of the site we believe that aside from our rather great distance irom brorn the markets that san juan county offers at least average opportunity for the successful agriculturist and with ui me oest ranges to be found in the whole united states there should be wonderful opportunities for cream eries and cheese factories the manufacture of swiss cheese has been the salvation of southwestern wyoming in the vicinity of afton star valley where there are several successful factories operating and where the milk checks are the principal income of the residents star valley is similarly situated to this region a high rather rigorous climate we believe that the same methods would prove extremely profitable to parts of san juan county and support a material increase in in our population what we need to make san juan county and progress forge made ahead is a little of that spirit of boosting that has california famous the world over not only on the part of the newspaper but also resident small we every great or will never grow and in progress as long as we persist discrediting our own locality the denver and rio grande R R has recognized the scenic value of san juan county scenery and is making preparations to inaugurate bus service to the points of greatest interest which is made clear by a press account published in this issue and it ill becomes a civic organization almost in the center of these wonders to assume an attitude of indifference towards a matter of such far reaching importance we trust that when a full attendance of club members turns out a more appreciative attitude will be manifested |
