Show rainbow bridge expedition for summer planned As an incident of a scientific exploration trip the rainbow I 1 bridge monument valley expedition which each summer enters the indian territory in southern utah probably made history when it introduced trod the modem automobile I 1 to a remote band of piute diute indians living in the san juan river country this band of pirtea is believed to be the last of the Ameri american aborigines to be introduced to the motor car some of these indi J ans at least had bad never seen an automobile until the expeditions ford V 8 trucks and station wagons broke trail into the wastelands of the river valley As the expedition pushed on through trackless valleys over rocky hillsides hill sides and through bridgeless streams into previously unexplored territory astonished aiutes glimpsed from their brush wicki ups for the first time the white mans answer to the transportation problems of their native ranges j the rainbow bridge monument valley expedition was organized in 1933 and each summer pushes further into the vast territory in southern utah and northern A arizona 2 I 1 which never before has been scientifically explored some square miles in extent sparsely settled and unproductive of either cither mineral or agricultural wealth the territory is said to include some sections which rival the far famed zion and bryce canyons in natural scenic beauty geologists archaeologists biologists surveyors and university scientists make up the expedition which was organized by ansel fra franklin klin hall chief of the field division of education of the national park service notable among the recent discoveries co of the party is the fossil plesiosaur or sea serpent found last year by dr daniel T oconnell of city college new york other othe discoveries of popular in interest terr include a cave in which were found the remains of giant rodents and birds of the ice age more than bones were removed from the cave for laboratory study the difficulties of transportation in this rugged region may be imagined from the fact that rainbow bridge itself can be reached only over a rough trail from the roads end some 13 miles distant beyond that the ford V as of the expedition are forced to make their own trails during this summer the automobiles will again be put to severe tests as the expedition moves into monument valley and surrounding monument country just north of the arizona utah state line this region has previously been practically inaccessible and certain sections have never been seen by white men |
