Show DESERET DESERET mm NEWS V 1 ALBERT carrington EDITOR wednesday november 10 1858 i IT T has been iterated and reiterated that utah sets at naught the action of the V U S kourts courts destroys or suppresses their records drives their judges from the territory subverts the laws of the land or or turns them into engines engines 11 of oppression to its citizens and defies the authority of the united states government 11 seeing those statements so often made m ae and arld so strenuously persisted in and that hat io too 0 by those who profess to inform the public mind one can but be astonished at the wonderful audacity or gross ignorance of certain writers and publishers As an american citizen librn born reared and koiv now dwelli dwelling ug upon american soil so we had bad supposed that no american writer or publisher at all deserving the tue name would stoop so low as to malign their fellow citizens or be reckless as to whether they printed truth or falsehood f t when has utah set at naught the action of we th e U t S courts never when ilas evas has utah destroyed or suppressed court records never atas it is probably true for we have heard it repeatedly peat edly stated without contradiction that I 1 some bome 8 unwise person did upon a time long iong past abstract ct a portion of the records record court of the judicial district in which this city is located and aside from other reliable testimony the possession by the court of the abstracted papers proves beyond a doubt or cavil that they were returned by those cognizant of the facts it has haa always been said that the papers wire were were away but a few days who took them or for what purpose we have never i I learned earned though it has always been strongly believed that a certain lawyer then secretary ic detary bf of utah by government appointment was ahe the person who purloined and returned those papers or caused it to bedone as he I 1 alone dirae had charge of the key hey to the room id ird which they were deposited and had interest in suits aft li then pending before the court but we term the abstractor unwise because his purloining of those papers could by no possibility have b benefited himself nor in any way jeopardized the rights of others where but in utah would so foolish an act of an unwise and as yet unknown individual have excited 14 inre more than a passing remark and occurring in ili what state or other territory would such an act be blamed upon the whole people and urged hied ai as an argument to alouse arouse prejudice against them for their overthrow we should not ot ba have ve allaud alluded ed to this stale lie about our court records had not some mischief makl maki making i ng bus busya yv 0 ody d Y bailin hailing fro from in here rehashed dit benefited by the golden eagles at washington but she would greatly prefer benefits derived through far less que s tio channels for there are already too many drains that sap the nations treasure only to work its overthrow would it not be better to be murp mure more mora economical and con constitutional in the expenditure of public f funds and pay the public debt increase the navy build railroads and impartially develop the resources of the whole of 0 our r wide domain k when in utah have the laws of the land been subverted or turned into engines of oppression to its citizens nver never by actual citizens even should you omit ornit majorities and minorities and only take note of the doings of a very small number there has been a few transgressions of law by individuals but less as gur our ur cou court rt records will prove than in any other like populous portion of the earth and so far as citations appearance arrests proof and the law were concerned transgressors have been promptly and justly dealt with far more so than many of them could have wished toe tae accusation of subverting laws and wresting them into en engines gines of oppression may hold good against some of the government appointees but is false as regards utah when has utah defied the authority of the united states government she LS has never defied the legitimately I 1 exercised authority of the federal
