johnson william E Mo Lellin john F boynton and william smith assembled at the house of president joseph smith jr who was present I with frederick 0 williams sidney rigdon ibis I 1 hitney and three elders parley P pl it rOTe e to new portage and orson apra att tt and dr rh oB marsh had not yet arrived to receive their ision wS tion ion I 1 after prayer by pre ent joseph smith jr he said if he were e patiently he could lay lav before the council an aich would be oi of importance he had for if lisa learned ined a fact by experience which on n always gave him deep sorrow it is a fact i no jave had ad in my possession every decision w which i h has been had upon important items of doctrine and ad i duties since the commencement of this work I 1 would not part with them for any any sum of money but we have neglected to tike take minutes of i such things thinking perhaps that they would 1 never benefit us afterwards which had we now would decide almost every point of doe doc trine which might be agitated but this has been ne neglected lecter lec ted and now we cannot bear r record ecord to the church and to the world of the great and d glorious manifestations which have been made ote to us with that degree of power and authority E ty awe we otherwise could if we now had these things g to publish publish sh abroad I 1 mince since the twelve are now chosen I 1 wish I 1 tell them a course which they may pursue ind and I 1 be bene beneSt fitted ted hereafter in a point poin t of light of 11 which which they are not now aware if they will on every time they assemble appoint a person to preside over them during the meeting and one or more to keep a record of their proceedings and on the decision of every question or iton item be it what it may let such decision be written writt enU and such decision will forever remain upon ree rec Q ord and appear an item of covenant or doe doc trine an item thus decided rosy may appear atthe at the time of little or no worth but should it b be e published and one of you yon lay hands on it after you will find it of infinite worth not only finly to your brethren but it will be a feast to your i own souls here is another important item if you as 1 from time to time and proceed to dis cuss important questions and pass decisions upon the same and fail to note them down by and b by oy you on will be driven to straits from which you yon wid will i not be able to extricate yourselves be oluse you nay may be in a situation not to bring your faith to bear with sufficient perfection or power to obtain the desired jn information formation or perhaps for ne electing to write these things when god revealed them not esteeming them of sufficient worth the spirit may withdraw and god may be beanery angry and here is or was a I 1 I 1 vast kno knowledge cledge oi of in infinite nuite importance which is now lost what was the cause causa of this it oame came in in Cori consequence sequence of slothfulness slothful nesa or a neg hect elect lect to appoint a man to occupy a few moments in in writing all these thesa decisions here let me prophesy pro hesy the time will come when it if you i neglect to do this thing you a ill fall by th the hands of unrighteous men were you to he be brought before the authorities a and n d be accused 1 of any crime or misdemeanor and be as inno cent as the angels of god unless you can provo yourselves to have been somewhere else your enemies will prevail over you but if you can bring twelve inep hoep to testify that you were in a certain phee at that time you will escape their hands bands now if 5 3 ou on will be careful to keep minutes of these things as I 1 have said it will be one of the most important records ever overseen seen for every such decision will ever after remain as items of doctrine and covenants the council then expressed their approbation concerning the for foregoing emoina remarks 0 of president smith and ap appointed hinted orson hyde and win E Mo
