introduction of a floral guessing contest prettily decorated was the home with smilax and tae chosen design in the adornment being festoon ing at the elegantly ladd luncheon the guests found their C bigelow monday at the reed parlors has no rival though given the fore part of the week it was a washington party and was given thus early that it would not occur la the lenten tide decorations of red white and blue crepe paper together with american flags and a life sized picture of washington gave the parlors a cheery air in the arrangement of the dining table to conform with customs of the sixty guests showed that the efforts of the hostess were fully appreciated THE YS the Y W C T U met with the president miss leota kennedy on wednesday evening after the program it was decided to hold a membership contest to close the first meeting in june miss carrie knapp was chosen captain of one side with the misses clare kennedy griffin carter stephens bessie severn parker anna parker brown and mr miller to assist mrs cooledge was chosen captain of the other side with misses chamberlain vera smith anna smith mueller bales malda severn williams frank mrs cohn and mr cobbum to assist it was deckler deckled that the losing side shall furnish a banquet the union then adjourned to meet in two weeks at the same place 2910 washington avenue W C T V the dinner given by the W C T U was a social as well as financial success about three hundred people dining with the union the parlors of the methodist church were tastefully decorated with flags and hatchets the W C T U moat of whom were afternoon which everyone seemed to enjoy and long to be remembered by the participants MR BARNES SURPRISED on wednesday evening of this week the fifth ward choir tendered their leader mr wm barnes a pleasant surprise the usual rehearsal was being held when a messenger announced that mr barnes was wanted on the outside As the jovial leader stepped without the church he was immediately blindfolded and carried away he knew not whither but after a short time he was placed on his feet again and the blind removed and mr barnes found himself in the amusement hall surrounded by one hundred and fifty friends he was too astounded to say much but soon got his bearings when he beheld long tables loaded down with delicacies fit tor kings and queens and learned that he was to be served by some of agdens most charming young ladles on behalf of the choir miss B parley presented mr barnes with a beautiful baton doing it with the grace which only young ladles possess mr barnes responded with appropriate remarks the evening was spent in dancing and other amusements and when the gathering dispersed it was with a feeling that all had enjoyed the affair immensely men sely SURPRISE PRINCIPAL OF WEBER STAKE ACADEMY for a week or more quiet whisperings around the weber stake academy indicated that there was something on foot but nothing materialized definitely until tuesday morning when special advantage was taken of the principals absence while in salt lake city on that morning were appointed and all arrangements made for a genuine surprise upon the principal L F the trap was sprung on tuesday morning by a special prearranged plan the principal was called out for a few moments upon his return school was to be called but lo 10 and behold no one responded the bell was tapped again and again but no one obeyed its signals the principal stood amazed it was the first time in thirty three years the students refused to obey him words fail to describe his looks teachers and students all in disobedience no one would budge all at once like a thunderbolt from the clear blue sky the words rang out surprise surprise followed with hearty genuine laughter and clapping of hands an explanation followed and the principal had to surrender for once he was in the hands of fais students and an unconditional surrender demanded and cheerfully given the lessons were hurriedly gone through and at the school dismissed tor the event of the evening at 8 the school again convened and an interesting program prepared especially for the occasion was enacted the first was a song by the academy choir followed with prayer after which prof christensen enter talked the audience with a beautiful violin solo which was highly appreciated precia ted miss bessie ineal in behalf of the students stated the object of the gathering and in words of commendation men dation spoke of the kind feelings entertained by the pupils for their beloved principal the hunte fiand lin club of the academy followed with c beautiful selection after which the principal responded feelingly to the love and respert shown him by his students fellow teachers and members of the board next followed a solo by miss herrack Herr lck a piano solo by miss pierce a beautiful song by the male quartette a recitation by miss maycock two mirth provoking songs by a double male quartette of aitho academy remarks by president C F and hon joseph stanford and a final song by the whole chool at the conclusion of this the company was marched down to the business department where three long stables were spread and speedily surrounded by a jovial crowd ot happy smiling students ice cream and cake were served by the ladles of the academy in their usual style well known by those who have ever attended the academy surprises and an adjournment was next taken to the preparatory department where amusements consisting of games and dancing were joyfully entered into until the wee sma hours of the night merriment innocent merriment reigned supreme and the surprise will ever be remembered as one of the most pleasant evar given by the students to the principal of the weber stake academy |
