The St. James Catholic Ladies Club held a Mexican dinner for couples from the parish and their guests on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. There were about 75 people in attendance. The menu consisted of margaritas, nachos, salad, rice, beans and smothered green burritos. This took the place of the regular business meeting. Other activities hosted by the club recently were the Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Oct. 8 where a meal of roast beef, stuffing, coleslaw and cake were served and the sale held Oct. 12. rummage-bak- e events are a quilt tying Upcoming party to make the quilts to be donated to the winter games party. It will be in the church basement on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Nov. 20. ALMA JEFFRIES (L) has a medal pinned on by Christie Gardiner as part of her recognition for personal service and devotion. She is one of three women from this area to receive this outstanding honor in the many year it has been given. Womens League has craft night Alma Jeffries given recognition for service Mrs. Alma Jeffries, Vernal, was one of the four Rebekah Ladies of Utah, honored with the Decoration of Chivalry by the Canton Colfax No. 1 and Ladies Auxiliary Patriarchs Militant of Odd Fellows and Rebekah Lodge. The event was held Oct. 12 in the Murray Oddfellow Lodge in Sandy. This honor is bestowed on worthy recipients who meet the requirements of devotion and service to her church, community, lodge and family. Mrs. Jeffries was nominated by her local lodge, Unity No. 23 and voted in by the Canton Colfax No. 1 and Ladies Auxiliary of the Odd Fellows of Utah. The ceremony was performed by the Cantons and Auxiliary in their dress uniforms who were adorned with their medals of honor. The four honored ladies and their maidens were dressed in white formal gowns and the young maidens pinned the beautiful medals on their matrons of honor. Christie Gardiner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gardiner of Vernal, did the honors for Mrs. Jeffries. Attending the ceremony from Vernal were 12 members of the Unity Rebekah No. 23, six members of Kingsbury Community UCC Church, the two Gardiner girls, Mr. Coke Jeffries and their children and grandchildren from Ogden and Sandy, Utah. (ri iiriimpiH Members of the Ashley Valley Womens League gathered Wednesday, Oct. 16 at Central Elementary School. The women discussed items of business including the upcoming Halloween party. The remainder of the evening was spent constructing the chosen craft for this year. Members were instructed by guest, Donna Nelson, who taught everyone how to make little scarecrows using burlap, Levi material, felt, various other scraps, masking tape and glue. for the evening were Sherry Perry, Dee Dee Johnson and Carma Bascom. These women made the arrangements for the evening as well as provided refreshments at the close. New year begins for Utopia Club Illinois studied by Cultural Club discussed by Poetry Society Carol Feltch hosted the Uintah Poetry Society members at her home Oct. 19. Tuesday, The Cultural Arts Club met at the home of Maurine Anderson for their regular meeting. Luncheon was served to 15 members. Ten members enjoyed a lesson on and discussed the 1986 contest rules. On display were a collection of books donated to the club from the family of Bonnie H. Behunin. Four members of the club, Carol Feltch, Amy Pope, LaRae Caldwell and Leora Jacobe, were at University of Utah, Saturday to hear the reading of the Poet of the Year, Patricia S. Grimm. How to enter contests Business of the meeting was ducted by President LeOra Jacobe. Mildred Mansfield gave the current topic on proper diet. The program of the winter, Know Your US, was presented by Marie Wardle,, who took members to the state of Elinois where they visited parks and statues honoring President Abraham Lincoln and presented the early life style of that part of the country. Betty Jean for the evening. was Beth Sweatfield presented the program on hypertension and conducted a seminar to teach the club members how to take blood pressure readings. A salad luncheon was served to members. Captain Smith conducted the business of the meeting. A song was led by Helen Hacking, accompanied by Mildred Mansfield. Louesa Hacking gave the lesson on immigrant pioners. Mildred Mansfield gave the history of Rhoda Slade Goodrich who lived in Vernal and pioneered Bluebell, Utah. The program was given by Vera Van Leuvin on their trip to Alaska. The four sisters and one brother made the trip together. The Utopia Club is the oldest social club in the valley. It was organized in 1929 with 18 members. There are two charter members still living. They are Jen Pope, Moab, and Mary Freeman of Vernal. New programs were given out to the members. Officers for the year are Carma Caldwell, president; Alice Warren, 1st vice president; Wilda Samuels, secretary; Mary Freeman, Registrar; Elizabeth Hatch, friendship and Revina Caldwell, prayer thought. The November meeting will be at Revina Caldwells with Bertie Shiner as made these cakes for several years; because of the love she has for everyone and we certainly love and appreciate her from the bottom of our hearts. Mildred Long was first place winner at bingo last Tuesday, winning six games. Rosie Mott won four games to place second. Rosie lived here in Vernal awhile and now lives in Phoenix, Ariz.
