Show Editorials Editor's Column Society Leeches: Will (not) work for food. Family Values - ' 4 199293 by Doug Murray Forum staff writer Movie Survey byUz Peterson ,ir ' As an individual working to support a wife and baby while attending school full time, I am sick and tired of spending my hard-earnmoney at the grocery store for food for my family only to encounter the infamous person on the outskirts of the parking lot holding a sign which reads, Will work for food. Recently I stopped to talk to one of these pour souls who was so hungry that he would swallow all pride and stand in the pouring rain ex' blistering heat to get food. I told him 1 was in need of some help hauling hay and that I would pay him six dollars per hour. His reply has stuck with me to this day. He said, Youve got to be crazy. I can make more than that standing right here holding this sign. These people are obviously not hungry enough to work for it All they want is a handout Even then they dont want food; they want money to support their habits, whatever they may be. One of the local television stations did a week-lon- g report on the transient problem in Utah, and the one thing that stuck in my mind was the comment of Major Russell Fritz, Salt Lake Basin Coordinator for the Salvation Army. He said, We have plenty of food here at the shelter. They the transients know where to come, but dont. They would rather have the money. My suggestion is dont give them money. What is wrong with our society when a person can stand on a street comer with a sign and make more than minimum wage? And whats worse, we support this problem by trying to fulfill our Samaritan duty by promoting these profiteers and their laziness. citizens can do some- We as What movies would you like to see this year? (Please be specific) ed I was at a friends apartment recently. Several of us were there, talking, drinking, hanging out Around 1 1 p.m. someone knocked on the door. It was the woman who lived across the hall. She was holding a baby. She told us without any expression that her husband had just taken a bottle of Tylenol. She asked if she could use the phone to call an ambulence because her husband had hidden their phone from her. The baby appeared very alert She had wide observant eyes. Big jug ears. And the mother was pretty. She was wearing a purple sweater that fell off one shoulder so her brassiere showed. She had londe hair and wore denim short s, no shoes. The woman also had a black eye, scrapes on bet forehead, and a bruise on ler bare shoulder. She told us that her husband had become violent, that he had hit her and then begun hitting himself. She left after a moment to see how her husband was doing, then came back and sat on the stairs outside. She kissed her babys head repeatedly, but it was just a motion, a nervous action like tapping her foot or biting her nails. She told us that she knew a man who loved her and her baby. She planned to go to his home later. She wanted to leave her husband, she said, but she knew she would be tried for adultery. The woman said her husband hit her, hurt himself, but she was afraid the next time it would be her baby. She said he had already stolen her baby away from her before. The infant never made a sound, just sat there watching us. She barely even moved. The paramedics came and took the husband away on a stretcher. The woman immediately went to call the man who she said loved her. She came back in a few minutes and said flatly, This isnt my night He says he doesnt want anything to do with me. She asked for a ride to the hospital so she could be with her husband. She didnt love him, she said, but she didnt want him to die. She went across to her apartment to pack some things for her baby and soon returned. Are you going to be OK tonight? one of us asked. Would you like a ride to your parents house or something? My parents and I havent spoken to each other for almost a year, she replied. She was looking for something then. Damn, she said. I cant find my cigarettes. Are any of you old enough to buy me cigarettes? The pretty woman the mother was really a girl not even old enough to buy her own cigarettes. In fact, she was IS years old.
