Duchesne, Altamont fall in state play-off- s It was a quick and disappointing state for DuClass basketball play-off- s chesne and Altamont last week with Duchesne dropping two straight and Altamont winning their first encounter and then falling twice. Duchesne ran into a brick wall its first game when it tangled with the Milford The Tigers were Tigers and lost 62-4winners of the Division One section of Region Eight and had a 16-- record over1-- 5. 5 all. Ken Brown started off that game with a hot 10 points in the first quarter but the Tigers held him down the rest of the game and he only got six more in the next three quarters. No other Eagle hit in the double figures. The Altamont Longhorns had better luck in their first game with Escalante Escalante downing the Moquis finished second in Division Two of Region 75-6- Eight Senior Bruce Todd chucked in 22 big points in that Longhorn outing. Gary Stringham added 17 and Reed Wardle put in 10 for the victors. Desperate Escalante and Duchesne in the second day of the dousquared-of- f and the Moquis ble elimination play-off- s That loss shot topped the Eagles the Eagles out of the sky for this season. The trio of Mark Hall (14 points), Ted Telisak (14) and Kent Brown (10) led the Duchesners in that loss, but their balanced attack failed to carry the day. Altamont was next to feel the wrath of the Milford Tigers as the Tigers clawed win. Actually the their way to a 69-6game was lost in the first quarter when Milford held a big lead. The Longhorns refused to give up but were never able to overtake Milford. The big guns for Altamont in that game were again led by Bruce Todd with 17, Gary Stringham with 15 and Joe Field- - Retarded citizens assoc, meeting Meet. 28 sted added nine. With Duchesne out of the tournament and Altamont on the ropes, the Longhorns faced Dugway the third day. They had played Dugway twice during the season and split those games. The Mustangs and Longhorns battled throughout the game but in the end it was the end for the Longhorns with Dugway on top Gary Stringham was the key to the first half game of the Longhorns when he canned 17 points, but he was able to get only four more in the second half. Helping Stringham was senior Bruce Todd with 17 and junior Joe Fieldsted with 11. Escalante won the consolation championship, Milford sixth and Dugway seif that is any venth in the play-offconsolation to the Eagles and Longhorns. Top county scorers were Bruce Todd with 18 point per game (ppg), Gary Stringham 18 ppg, (both of Altamont) and Duchesne's Kent Brown with 15 ppg. Utah's Assocation for Retarded Citizens is holding a meeting Thursday March 28 and request all citizens in the Basin to please attend, since it concerns residents of the Basin which should be a concern of everyone, the mentally and physically handicapped. Guest speakers will be Kenneth H. of government afYockey fairs for UAR citizens, and Jim Byrnes, director of project TURN (Teach Utah's Retarded thru Normalization) and director for UAR citizens. Mr. Yockey will speak on and answer questions on funding and legislation. Many feel one of the largest obstacles to overcome is getting the public informed and involved. Mr. Byrnes will discuss the purpose of private homes and training centers in the program. UAR citizens are combining with other programs and organizations that are concerned about the handicapped in Duchesne County. The UAR citizens urge other citizens. Mayors, councilmen, county commissioners, bishops, ward leaders, principals, teachers, businessmen, civic and social club leaders, parents, family members, friends and relatives to attend this very special meeting and show concern and interest in the handicapped citizens and in the program. The meeting will be held in the Duschool chesne Elementary library, Thursday March 28, at 7:30 p.m. 67-6- USU names honor roll students 63-5- 3 J 1974 Names of Utah State University stu- dents who achieved the honor roll for Fall quarter, 1973, have been announced by Dr. Claude M. Burtenshaw, vice president for student affairs. In order to be included on honor roll, a student must be enrolled full time (15 hours) and have a grade point average of 3.50 or better (4.0 is straight A). Students from Roosevelt achieving the honor roll were: Clark B. Allred, agrin culture; Kent B. Haueter, business; Snow, family life; and Randall Glade Hancock, science. The Eagles also fell to Escalante Thursday. Brown, who hod 10 of Duchesne's 9 points in the first quarter of play with Milford in the opening round of tournament play last week, shows his form in dunking two points. Changes this year include a pursuit permit for both sxrips. Persons interested in chasing cougars and bears for recreation, but do not wish to harvest the animals may buy a "$10 pursuit permit." A separate permit is required for earh species. Harvest permits for residents will still cost $15 and $100 for non residents. Nonresidents will be allowed to guide bear and cougar hunters this year.
