BY DARREN COTTAM Baseball, Americas pasttime, has been in the blood of Southern Utah States Baseball Coach Bill Groves since childhood. Growing up just 10 minutes from Dodger Stadium, Groves rarely missed a game. Since that time, his love for the game has grown and loyalty to Dodger Blue and recently Thunderbird Red has made an impact on his life. Groves considers his wife Beth h is greatest assistant coach. But he also has a staff of three others. Groves said this years staff is the best in his years at SUSC. Layne Hales is the Bird pitching coach and hails from Spanish Fork. He played for Utah Valley Community College before transfering to SUSC where he finished his college career and he started his coaching career two years ago. Hales feels this years pitching staff has the most depth he has seen since becoming involved with SUSC baseball. The pitching rotation includes Kendall Bennett, Craig Blackham, Ron Goforth, Kirk Jensen, and relievers Brooks Peters and Leroy Woodard. Brian Whitaker takes care of the infield coaching duties for the Whitaker is a Las Vegas native who played for UNLV, a junior college in California and finally in Cedar City. Whitaker got a shot few others get when the Cincinnati Reds organization picked him up at a tryout camp. Whitaker stayed with the Reds for two years until he decided to become a coach. Rounding out SUSCs baseball staff is newcomer Gordon Dotson. Dotson coaches the catchers, first basemen and is the hitting instructor for the squad. Playing his college baseball at BYU, Dotson was a member of the Cougar team that broke the NCAA record for team home runs, hitting 159. It was a miracle Dotson was ever offered a coaching job at SUSC considering he once pounded out four homers against SUSC. Head Coach Bill Groves Hitting Coach Gordon Dotson mr mm- mr . tr&. ...
