Fuentes, 98, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008, at his son Manuel’s home in Manti. Manuel was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Mexico City, Mexico to Pablo Fuentes and Juana Morales. He married his sweetheart, Celia Garcia Sanchez on April 24, 1964, and they were sealed with their children in the Mesa, Arizona LDS Temple on July 25, 1973. Manuel came from a humble family. He was the second youngest of eight children: Tomas, Ezequiel, Jose Aurelio, Julia, Jose Aurelio II, Adolfo, Manuel and Julia II. His father, Pablo, died when Manuel was a baby. Manuel experienced the Mexican Revolution as three of his brothers enlisted in the Mexican Army to fight for their freedom. At the age of 14, Manuel was the only one of his brothers still living, and he had to provide for his mom and younger sister. He worked for a bus line as a money collector. A few years later he received his commercial license, which was the start to a lifetime job as a bus driver. He continued this line of work for 35 years. During World War II, Manuel worked four years for the Santa Fe Railroad in the United States. He learned at an early age to love his family, his job and God. His mother always told him to be kind to all men. He took care of his mom until she died on May 9, 1957. Manuel moved with his wife and unmarried children to Manti during the 1980s to be near his oldest son, Manuel. He enjoyed his time among the good people of the community. Manuel has been a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many callings. The calling that he loved the most was serving as a missionary. Throughout his life, many people joined the church because of his efforts. Manuel loved President Gordon B. Hinckley and made sure everyone knew they were born during the same year. During the last 10 years of his life, as his body slowed down, Manuel heeded President Hinckley’s call by increasing his daily scripture study. Manuel is survived by his children David Adolfo, Maria Mireya, Raul Ezequiel, Josue Pablo and Noemi Elizabeth, all of Mexico; Manuel, Rebeca, Moroni and Rocio, all of Utah; and Ruth of Rhode Island. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters and wife, Celia. Manuel (Dad, Abuelito, Bisabuelito) left a great legacy for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a man of God. He had trials throughout his life, but he showed us charity, the pure love of Christ, by his example. We thank our Father in Heaven and the Savior for having been a part of this great man’s legacy. As parents, Johanna and I feel it is important to support the education of our children and teach them the values of integrity, hope, humility and gratitude. Brad was raised on farm work and was trained in engineering and business. He has worked in industry, small business, and education. “Brad actively supports agriculture and our rural values. I’ve been impressed with his service to Sanpete County.” — John Keeler, Local Agricultural Leader Effective Representation We need to elect someone who reflects our values and who can work effectively with the state legislature and governor to actually get things done. Utah’s strong conservative values are largely responsible for our rating as the “Best Managed State” in the country. Limited Government Government needs to do a few things well and do them locally. Government works best which works closest to the people. I will support limited government and local decision making. Strong Families & Education We have a unique opportunity to preserve traditional values. I have fought hard to protect Utah families and sponsored the Internet Child Protection Act. I also have a strong record of supporting education. I honor dedicated teachers everywhere who help us as parents educate our children. Rural Values Agriculture, small business, honest work and good people are the heart of our small towns. Protecting rural Utah has never been so important. I’ve brought statewide visibility to the Sanpete Gooseberry Narrows water project. and worked closely with Millard and Juab counties to protect our west desert water.
