Show Cyan Magenta Yellow Black A8 Sanpete Messenger/Gunnison Valley Edition Wednesday, February 2, 2005 Mt. Pleasant fifth grader nominated to be international ambassador A prestigious honor has been bestowed on Klynton Frederick, an outstanding Mt. Pleasant 5th grader, but has also presented a significant challenge to his mother, Leslie Christofferson. Klynton has been nominated by the People to People program to be one of only about 40 outstanding U.S. students to be international student ambassadors to other countries. If he can accept the nomination, Klynton will represent Sanpete County and the United States in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales this summer. However, the honor has put a great burden on the family. Klynton Frederick Klynton’s expenses will be over $5,000, which needs to be submitted by April 1 according to Leslie, who is a single mom living in Mt. Pleasant on a single income. “It’s a huge financial challenge for us,” she said. “I don’t have enough in savings to pull this off, so we’re going to be doing all kinds fund raising activities and look as hard as we can for donations in order to make this happen.” Christofferson said she is in the process of organizing a number of fund raisers now and has opened an account in Klynton’s name at Far West Bank in Mt. Pleasant. The People to People program was created by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, and is currently headed by his granddaughter, Mary J. Eisenhower. Students who are nominated to be ambassadors must first be interviewed, then submit references and are finally chosen because of their outstanding character and behavior. The young ambassadors meet with members of government in the countries visited, visit key points of interest, learn about the geographies and cultures of the local areas, and will be involved in humanitarian projects in each country. In the process, Klynton will share information about Sanpete County and how people here live.
