A recent isfeue of the New York Commercial Com-mercial publishes the following story, which is Riven a great deal of credence in Salt Lake City: It Ik believed that Harrlman interests are seeking to get control of the last practical route through the Sierras one that was surveyed for the main line of the Western Pacific and abandoned for the ono thiit has been followed In building build-ing the new road. This conclusion is prompted by the fact that thirty surveyors known to be In tho service of the Southern Pacific are running grades through Washoe countv. "Stv , and Lassen nnd Plumas counties, California, over nearly the same route that was abandoned by the Western Pacific. Pa-cific. This route It; through Fredonyer puK which was conceded by engineers to bc entirely practicable, but not as desirable as iho Beckworth, which has been used. In connection with the surveys through , Fredonyer past:, it has been suggested I that a now main line might be sought. In that direction. The distance Is not much greater than that traversed by the present pres-ent route, whereas the grade would bt much less. The activities of tho nurvcyors have also been cxplolned by the suggestion sugges-tion that the Oregon Short Lino might hp seeking a connection from a point on Us present main lino In Idaho to some point on tho Shasta route of Iho Southern Pacific. |
