C March 1 In I.-In In Inthe the last Indian appropriation bill was contained a provision directing the Secretary of the Interior to investigate investigate and report on the Condition condition of ot certain Indian reservations among which were the Uintah and and Ouray reservations reservations res res- res- res in Utah The Te inspector havIng having hav hay ing log this matter mater in charge has made his report which is quite quie full ful and ex He has the following to say concerning the Uintah This reservation is o occur occupied by the Uintah and White river Ut Utes Ute's s who own It The Uncompahgre Utes have a alight aright aright right light by an agreement to take allotments allot allot- alot- alot ments meats on this reservation providing they pay for the same These Indians lease about acres for which they get about 2000 grass money paid semi semi This grass money with wih some interest money gives them theman an annuity of about 40 per capita capit There are only about Indian houses most moat of these were built buit by the Gov Gov- They have much more land under irrigation than they cultivate they are generally progressive non la lazy y opposed to schools and will wi never advance either in civilization or self- self support until the ration raton system is abolished and they are forced to earn earna earna a a living by by their own labor These lands should be surveyed and subdivided and also be allotted The Indians Indians' I will wi not take allotments or dispose of any surplus land so long as they can c'an can draw money from grass and other leases and Government rations There is a mining lease wih with the Raven Mining company to work minerals on ona ona ona a royalty So far the Indians have gotten nothing out of the contract There is abundance of coal gilsonite asphaltum and mineral wax Copper and gold are also reported but none has ever been mined The Inspector has the following re report report report re- re port to make on the Shoshone and Arapahoe reservations in Wyoming This reservation is an excellent one The Shoshones are doing very well wel They require however an extension of their ditches diches which could be done for probably The elaborate system of irrigation as as' as recommended by Mr Butler Buter is not necessary All Al that Is necessary now for these Indians Indians Indians In In- In- In is an improvement of the prescot present present pres pres- ent cot ditches diches as suggested The Arapa- Arapa hoes located on the east end of the reservation have more land under ir irrigation Ir- Ir than they theY c carts r make use of The Shoshones are industrious and this year made good crops and are improving They continue however to draw rations which Is i a detriment to them |
