Show A STARTLING SUICIDE. Tin: dispatches yesterday brin the startling news of the suicide in Wash-it)i;t'ii Wash-it)i;t'ii os Prevott Paradol, the newly-arrived newly-arrived French minister. This is probably prob-ably the first blood of the war, self-Jrawn, self-Jrawn, for unless bis mind had been affected by the vast interests at stake consequent upon the European rupture, rup-ture, it is difficult to conceive why he should thus have sought sudden and dishonored death. He had won enviable envi-able fame as a literateur of high ability abil-ity ; he had just received a position of great responsibility and honor ; he had beeu warmly welcomed in the country to which he so recently came, as the representative of a mighty and friendly power ; he had apparently long years of honored and matured usefulness before be-fore him ; yet with all, a pistol shot burie- in ignominy his talents, honors, and prospects, for the suicide never respected, however mourned. It may be that the excessive heat, joined to excessive labor, had partially unsettled his mind ; but it is sa-d to think of so bright a star in the human firmament voluntarily quenching its own licht w:th violent hands. |
