A meeting of the elevated railway engineers was held last night in secret, at which the question of an immediate strike was discussed. It is understood un-derstood the meeting broke up at 11:50, and it was understood that , A STBTKE HAD BEEN OBDEBED, To take effect on the Third Avenue elevated road with the train which leaves the Cito Hall at 12:05 a. m. ' " Inquiry at the City Hall station of the Third Avenue line at 12:50 developed the fact that all lights at the station were turned out and an employe was found stationed at the foot of each flight of stairs by which the station is approached. An order by wire from "up town" had been received - BISECTING THE LIGHTS TURNED OUT, And the men at the stairways were instructed to direct people to the main line at Chatham Chat-ham Square. , It is stated that the company had purposed pur-posed closing the Ninth and Second Avenue lines to-day, in order, it is suggested, that the firemen on those lines might be used as engineers on the Sixth and Third Avenue lines in the event of a strike. Midnight trains on the Sixth and Third Avenue main lines were running regularly. Station men say the regular engineers are in the cabs, and that they profess to know nothing of an order to strike. , CHIEF ABTHUB IN NEW XOBK. P. M. At 1:30 p. m. the committee on grievances conferred with Colonel Hain and Treasurer Galloway, and it was agreed that the Elevated Ele-vated Railway Company would submit a proposition to them at 3 o'clock to-morrow.
