Show Stretching OHt a Land Patent. Washtngton November 30. Commissioner Sparks, of the Land Office, has recommended recommend-ed to Secretary Lamar that he request the Department of Justice to bring a suit to set aside the patent for the grant known as the Corta Madera del Presidio, in California. The patent was comparatively limited in extent, ex-tent, including some 3,000 or $4,000 acres. It is said to be of great value, owing to its proximity to San Francisco. In explanation of his reasons for making the recommendation, recommenda-tion, the Commissioner to-day said: "They (the patentees) have got more land than the grantcalled for. I think it is very plain that :- ''V - .-I:. -VI .J"'M -; the grant does not call for the amount of land they got. I do not think I can say there was any fraud in it, but perhaps there was some sharp practice. They contrived to spin out a league of land to a good deal more in fact, to several leagues. My action in recommending the suit is to reduce the patent to the amount of the grant, admitting admit-ting the confirmees were entitled to a certain quantity of land." |
