The “derby” was filmed and aired in a half-hour feature presentation on ABC/Channel 4 on Sunday, August 24. The 12th annual Beat the Pro tournament is the brainchild of ABC sportscaster Wesley Ruff, who wanted to find a way to make a significant contribution to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The tournament is structured such that each week, starting in June, a playoff is held at a different golf course throughout the greater Salt Lake area. Contestants donate $10 for a chance to beat the Pro on a designated golf hole. Then, for the final tournament, which was held at Wolf Creek, all ten weekly winners compete in a “sudden death” format. The 2003 winner was 79-year-old Garth Ford, who has competed in many of the previous derbies, and who has actually won it once before! The Johnson family of Provo, M.D.A Ambassadors for the Salt Lake region, were able to attend the event with their 10-year-old son Sean and his sisters Ashley and Riley. They were not only on hand to accept the “big check,” but also enjoyed the dinner and were thrilled to stay in a brand new Trappers Ridge home, compliments of Valley Lodging, who donated the use of the home for the M.D.A. family. The final “frosting” of the event was a dinner hosted by Wolf Creek for the tournament guests, where chef Zach Dearden and Hospitality Director Sean Luebbers surprised Steve Roberts, Wolf Creek Resort Managing Partner and Bob Whitney, Watts Enterprises, get ready for the sponsor tournament. the guests with an incredible and delicious meal, including a shrimp cocktail, tenderloin of beef with Alaskan King Crab legs, gourmet potatoes, and chocolate mousse dessert. According to Wolf Creek’s managing partner Steve Roberts, “We were honored to have the chance to sponsor the Beat the Pro Tournament, and, with the help of our partners Legacy-Fairways Properties and Watts Enterprises/Trappers Ridge, contribute to this worthy cause. Rob Thomas, our golf course superintendent, had the course in incredible shape, and all the players commented on the incredible beauty of the Valley, as well as the quality of play on the course. One contestant was from North Ogden, and he didn’t even know this valley and golf course existed!” ABC/Channel 4’s anchorman Randall Carlisle summed the event up with his vocal praise; “It’s just so amazing this place is here. I had no idea this kind of incredible natural beauty existed—didn’t even know this valley was here. I love this golf course, and I will definitely be back—you can count on it!” Internet Friends Meet By Gordon Madsen On August 9, 2003 a group from Ogden, Utah School Friends Web Site met at the Berth 55 Seafood Deli in Long Beach, California where a luncheon of various seafood delicacies were enjoyed on the Patio overlooking Long Beach Harbor. It was a very pleasant time for old acquaintances to renew memories, and to make new ones. Of the group, only Gordon, Jan, Vie Lee, and Larry had ever met in person. The rest were just names on the Internet. The founder of the Web site, commonly referred to as TT was even in attendance. He has preferred to stay nameless until this time. But now all will know who he is! A great time was had by all. Hopes are that we can all get together again next year at some time and place to be determined later.
