Show Page 10 The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume II, Issue III December 1999 Easy Steps to Help You Save Energy – and Money. While you may not be aware of it, there are literally hundreds of ways you can help to conserve energy in your own home. Not only will your efforts reduce energy usage, you’ll also be reducing your energy expenses. Here are a few suggestions you may want to implement at home or in the office. Change your furnace filter regularly to enable your furnace to run cheaply and cleanly. During the winter, you should change your filter monthly. Compact fluorescent light bulbs use only one-fourth the energy of conventional incandescent bulbs and last ten times as long. You’ll find a wide assortment of energy-saving bulbs at your local Ace hardware store. Turning down the heat when you leave home is a good way to save energy and money. A programmable thermostat or a clock on your hot water heater will help you save energy by automatically adjusting the temperature while you’re gone. Install motion sensor lights outside which turn on when someone approaches. This allows you to save energy and still light your yard when you need it, along with the added security. Paint the interior of your home or office a lighter color and you won’t need to use so many lights, which saves you energy. Lighter paint reflects more light. Insulating your attic, hot water pipes, weather-stripping doors and windows and wrapping your hot water heater in an insulating blanket will all help you keep your cool when you get your energy bills.
