Wilkerson Fine Art “New Views” It has been said that the only thing you can count on is change. That is the case with Wilkerson Fine Art. But rather than using the word “changing” to describe this business, perhaps a better word would be “evolving.” The gallery of fine art that originally opened its doors in the South Fork Village in July of 2001 featured 19th and 20th century artwork, glass work, and Alaskan carvings, and only a spattering of art by local artists. Impressed with the quality of the gallery, it wasn’t long before many Utah artists began contacting the gallery. This was a time when the gallery was visited more often by artists than by art buyers. Getting to know the artists has been the best experience, said owner, Kris Wilkerson, “It was not difficult to recognize the amazing talent and depth of artistic ability of artists living in Northern Utah. I will never forget the time Doug Braithwaite from Sunset, Utah quietly walked into the gallery. We chatted about the gallery’s art and then humbly mentioned that he Please mail, email, or call Shanna at 745-2688 or Jeannie at 745-2879 if you have material you would like to share. I always take time to look at artists’ work whether they bring the original through the door, slides, or a portfolio of work. Fortunately he had slides with him of some of his work. I was blown away at the quality. He just grinned shyly, but I think he was surprised by how excited I was about his work.” Over the next year and a half more and more local artists were featured in the gallery. Kris says, “As I was preparing to open the gallery, one of the first artists I contacted was Steve Johnson. A friend had shown me a couple of his pencil drawings and I was amazed, but it wasn’t until he walked through the doors carrying Tenderness, an oil featuring a young girl tenderly holding a rabbit, that I began to understand what this cowboy artist does. I can remember thinking to myself, I love this place; not only is Ogden Valley a hidden jewel, here within the tiny Celeste C. And then, after meeting artists Steve Songer, Jerry Hancock, and Robert Call, I realized that what the Valley offered in the way of artists and their artwork only kept getting better.” When the South Fork Village complex was sold, Wilkerson Fine Art needed to find a new home. With not much commercial property established in Ogden Valley, finding anew location proved difficult. In the meantime, Kris moved the gallery into her small home in Huntsville. Kris says, “What worked best during this time was taking photos of current works by the artists. And although only a few people would come to my home for viewings, Wilkerson Fine Art really became mobile. With a lot of my clients in Seattle and Anchorage, I had been doing computer presentations of artwork for some time. So instead of people visiting the gallery, I started showing the art through Power Point computer presentations in people’s homes or offices. Clients really like the idea that they can look at the art in the comfort of their own setting. They are able to see what works for their location through a free art consultation.” In November of 2003, owners Kris and husband Mark purchased the large, tan brick ranch home on Highway 39 between Chris’ Restaurant and Trapper’s Loop Road. What the Wilkersons found was a perfect home in an ideal location. Kris states, “The gallery fits perfectly in the home’s downstairs, leaving ample living space upstairs. Today, Wilkerson Fine Art continues to show works of art by appointment in our residential gallery or in customers’ homes or offices.” Giving back to the community is an important feature of Wilkerson Fine Art. This year the business has many art exhibits planned; a percentage of every exhibit’s proceeds will be donated to a local charity. The first exhibit to celebrate the new location is aptly titled “New Views.” The exhibit will also serve as a celebration of Wilkerson Fine Art’s 3rd anniversary. “New Views” will feature new works by local Utah artists. The exhibit opens Friday, September 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and is by invitation only. An open house for the general public is slated for Saturday, September 25 from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. Kris says, “It really is a celebration of change and renewal.” For more information, contact Kris Wilkerson at 745-9557.
