From his assertions the public, who are interested in this matter, would inter thut I was negligent and derelict in duty, therefore, in equity to myself, I cannot permit such a load of responsibility to rest upon my shoul ders. The facts are a rol.ews: Sunday morning, the 15th tilt, Mr. Hall came to me and said tbut he wns getting very anxious about the northern inni's; that he had sent several packages of registered matter north, nnd whs anxious to hear from them; and wanted to know why ihey did not receic their maiis more regularly. I replied, "the. road has been blockaded with snow and we have not received any mail for several dsiy.'' I was not at that time aware of the mail trom Logan being marked and sent via C. P. R R., Corinne, which has been the case; and only in one instance has the until been nonkpil and carried via. Ogden. Empty mail sack have been received here a nunrier of times, but only iinu sack has been brought (and marked) to tlden by U. N. R. R. coutuiuiug mail matter. Several questions were nsked and answered, in purport very nearly the same as rrported by Mr Hall, but always answered with refereuee to mail comiug from Cache Valley. Mr Hall made no allusion whatever to mails from tnis end N. R R. of the road. Feb. Oi h, the commenced making regular irips from Ogden. running north on that date, also the 10th, 11th and PJth the mail was carried through to Logan, the train and northern mail returning the mail as tar the same Uay. Knowing us Corinne, this it was impossible for me to answer his last question, as reported by him, that according to my statement the train had not made one through trip, and that the mail had been taken from here regularly, since the 9th, and returned each day until the 14th. is simply absurd, and was never spoken of in any such terms. On the 13th. 14th aud loth tho train did not get further than Hampton Station, where the mail was left in charge of the section "boss" and operator. On the ltitb the train got as far as the foot of the hill, about three miles this side of Hampton's, but was met at that point by the mail carrier from Logan, and mails were transferred. The mail matter that bad been left at Hampton's the three previous days was taken to Logau the evening of the 16ih, and mails have con tinued to be carried in that way regularly up to (hit date. The truth of this statement 1 ean vouch for, as it was obtained from the conductor whojhascharge of the mail while on the train since being carried by the U. N. R. R. The delay occasioned by mail going north via. C. P. R. R. and Corinne, has already been explained by Supt. Thatcher. I do not think Mr. Hall would willingly misrepresent a matter of this kind, but he undoubtedly is laboring under a misunderstanding in regard to the question. I am as anxious, probably, as himself.to see the mails lorwarded with greatest possible dispatch via. Utah Northern, And will be careful to see that mails are promptly transferred at this place. Montgomery, North Ogden, Mart Editos Junction 5, '74. : Dkar Sik: The statement in the Junction concerning the death of ilyrua Montgomery of this place, has attracted attention here. The circumstances of this sad case were as follows : . Oh the 10th of Ptbruary, Hyruo SmitU Montgomery, ami his brother Alma, aged respectively 24 and 22 yen rj, (the latier the lirst child born in North Ogden,) both started lo the kanyon together to procure wood. Aftersecuring hi! teams at the foot of the hill, they commenced to ascend tiie side hill, when llyruui requested his brother to return to the teams, staling he would go up alone. About fifteen or twenty minute after, Alma heard his brother cominr down on a snow slide. When neaiitf the ravine, he was standing about tbe centre of the slide, wht-- it divided ant closed iu upon Hyrum on both si Jce, covering him several feet under the snow. Alma took one horse, rode into tows to the store, procured shovels and with teams started and citizens spades, cut for the scene of the sad occurrence. Arriving at the spot they a'l commenced work to extricate the young man, but loo late, as tbe snow was packed bo lightly around him that death mukt hare been instantaneous. On the 2lst tbe funeral took place, and all the citizens, seemingly, old tod young turned out to show the high respect they held for this estimable and promising young man, whose honorable, gentlemanly course gained for him a wide circle of friends, w Lo mourn hit uutimely death.
