This BYU football season opener will feature four former local prep stars in the lineup. They include starting quarterback, Jim McMahon; starting left tackle, Chuck Ehin; second unit left end, Brandon Flint and Kevin Christiansen who is entering his sophomore season at Provo. McMahon and Christiansen enjoyed their prep days at Roy High while Ehin and Flint performed under Gary Hansen at Layton High School. Another interesting note is that of the total athletes on the roster, 18 are players while the other 52 have come to. BYU from schools outside Utah. Picked as the team to beat in the 70 home-grow- n Western Athletic Conference, the Cougars open a new decade of football Saturday night on the Lobos field. Kickoff will be 7 p.m. and the contest will also serve as Joe Morrisons debut with the Worlfpack. Conference games are crucial, with, the Cougar staff is looking for an offense. With Brad Wright at quarterback direction of new coach Joe Morrison, former head coach at Tennessee-Chattanoogwhose teams won three Conference Southern championships before he departed for Albuquerque. is back, so we Sayers, who was are sure to see some strong running. It was Sayers who scored the first touchdown in last years BYU-UNgame in Provo, pushing the Lobos But the Cougars then ahead, responded with 59 points to take a lop- -' sided win on their way to the WAC championship. New Mexico finished in a tie for fourth in the WAC race, and leveled out at the .500 mark with a 6 overal record. Now the Wolfpack is under the Morrisons last team at UTC U979) finished second nationally in pass, interceptions with a total of 27, and was fifth nationally in turnovers gained. BYU led the nation last year in yards gained passing. While the Lobos unquestionably have last falls film of quarterback Marc Wilson, they may be wondering about Wilsons replacement,' Jim McMahon. McMahon, who was as a sophomore before redshirting the 79 campaign, has demonstrated his' ability to run the ball as well as pass. That the Cougars will put the ball in the air is a virtual certainty. BYU became the first team in college history (Division 1 ) to pass for over 4,000 yards in a single season (1979), and little slack, if any, is expected in. 1980. Although Wilson has departed, McMahon ranks among the best in the area. And there is another plu- s- the top team BYU receivers of last year are all returning. In all, 14 of last years 22 startes are back in the fold, and the Cougars had a good recruiting year as well. The Cougar running game will again feature tailback Homer Jones and fullback Eric Lane. But third member of and Ricky Martin among the receivers, said Edwards, we could see more passing. And tailback Jimmy C 7-- Edwards emphasized, and were naturally concerned about not knowing more than we do about the new program at New Mexico. We sense an upsurge in football there, but we dont have a lot to work on with regard to what to expect next Saturday night.
